Hamline Tops Yellowjackets

Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket men's hockey team has been on a good run. Going back to Dec. 1, the Yellowjackets had won nine of their last 10 games, including their last five entering play Saturday.

Unfortunately for them, all good things, including winning streaks, come to an end.

Hamline scored five times in the second period, including three goals in a span of 1:41 to top the Yellowjackets 5-0 at Wessman Arena Saturday night.

For the Yellowjackets (10-7-0, 5-2-0 WIAC), the loss comes in their final non-conference game of the 2023-24 season, as the remaining games of the campaign will all be played within the WIAC.

The Yellowjackets held Hamline to just three shots on goal in both the first and third periods, but it was the middle 20 minutes where the Pipers did all their damage.

At 3:42 of the second Hamline moved in front 1-0, thanks to a lucky bounce. The Pipers had the Yellowjackets pinned in their own zone, and when the 'Jackets went to clear the puck bounced off a player and into the net to make it 1-0. Brandon McNamara was credited with the goal.

It went to 2-0 at 8:14 when A.J. Carls put a bouncing puck home on the power play.

Following the second goal, the Yellowjackets had a good push and sustained time in the offensive zone, but they came up empty. The best opportunity came when Reed Stark (Suffern, N.Y./Douglas County West) went in on a breakaway, but Hamline goaltender Maximilian Haselbacher stymied him with a great glove save.

Later in the period Hamline blew the game wide open. Carson Simon deflected a point shot home on a power play to make it 3-0 at 14:59. Just 27 seconds later Calvin Knight wristed a shot home from the left wing to make it a 4-0 game.

That goal spelled the end of the night for Yellowjacket starter Jan Skorpik (Brandýs nad Labem, Czechia/OA Prague), who finished the game with 11 saves on 15 shots.

Jack Boschert (Florissant, Mo./Duchesne) came on in relief of Skorpik, but he was greeted rudely as the Pipers scored right away. At 16:40, Jackson Wille scored from the right side of the goal to make the lead 5-0. That was the only goal Boschert would allow and he finished the game with six saves.

In the penalty-filled third period, the Yellowjackets applied plenty of pressure and outshot the Pipers 18-3, but they were unable to solve the defense.

For the game, the Yellowjackets outshot Hamline 40-22.

The Yellowjackets will be back at home Friday, Jan. 19 when they host UW-Eau Claire in the first game of a two-game weekend series. The opening faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
