Holmquist’s Hat Trick Powers Yellowjackets to Dominant Victory Over Eagles

Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's soccer team was back in action Wednesday night at their new home, Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium. Under the lights, the Yellowjackets faced off against Northwestern in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play, delivering a commanding 6-0 shutout victory.

On a crisp fall night, the Yellowjackets came out with excitement and energy, immediately putting pressure on the Eagles. In the seventh minute, Lindrey Schendel (Longmount, Colo./Skyline) delivered a perfectly placed corner kick to Mya Holmquist (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo), who headed the ball past the Eagles' goalkeeper to give UWS an early 1-0 lead.

Holmquist delivered an impressive performance tonight, completing a hat trick in the second half by scoring two more goals just 15 seconds apart.

After tonight's win the Yellowjackets are now 9-6-0 overall and 7-1-0 in UMAC action.

Yellowjacket goalkeeper Quinn Clark (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) started the match and improved her record to 5-3-0. She faced eight attempted shots, making five saves to secure her fifth shutout of the season.

Match Notes
  • The Yellowjackets wasted no time doubling their lead early in the second half, making it 2-0. Erika Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) delivered a well-placed pass from the right corner of the field to Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior), who fired a shot off the left goal post and past the Eagles' goalkeeper.
  • UWS kept the pressure on, and in the 55th minute, Julia Lindow's (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) corner kick found Schendel, who fired the ball past the Eagles' goalkeeper. This marked Schendel's first goal of the season.
  • Just 15 seconds later, Schendel threaded a perfect pass up the middle, splitting the Eagles' defense and finding Holmquist, who slotted the ball into the back of the net on the left side. This marked Holmquist's second goal of the match.
  • To extend the Yellowjackets' lead to 5-0, Kamryn Hill (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) lofted a perfectly timed pass over the Eagles' defense, finding Holmquist, who fired it into the center of the net. This goal completed Holmquist's hat trick, bringing her season total to 13 goals, tying her with Wilson for goals scored this season.
  • Lindow earned her second assist of the game with a well-placed corner kick, finding Beth Schneider (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) in front of the net. Schneider headed the ball past the left goal post, extending the Yellowjackets' lead to 6-0.

The Yellowjackets are back in action Saturday, Oct. 19 with more UMAC action when they host Bethany Lutheran. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium.
