Yellowjackets, St. Benedict Battle to 2-2 Tie

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – For the second time in a week, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team took the ice on a Tuesday night. And for the second time in a week, the Yellowjackets were taking on St. Benedict on a Tuesday evening.

Last week, the Yellowjackets outlasted the Bennies for a high scoring, 5-4 win. This time around, the offense was a little tougher to come by.

Twice in the game the Yellowjackets trailed by a goal, and twice they were able to erase the deficit, as the Yellowjackets and Bennies skated to a 2-2 tie at Ritschie Arena.

The game will go in the books as a tie, but the Yellowjackets (3-2-1) would earn a victory in the shootout, outscoring the Bennies 2-0.

Seniors Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Brynn MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) would score the goals for the Yellowjackets, who got 24 saves in goal from Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake).

Game Notes
  • The Yellowjackets outshot St. Benedict 27-26.
  • St. Benedict opened the scoring in the final minute of the first period when Shea Stinnett made it 1-0.
  • Early in the second period the Yellowjackets tied it. Coz held the zone, pinching down the right board and running a give-and-go with Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius). From the right circle, Coz ripped a shot over the glove of St. Benedict goaltender Ellynor Haack at 4:37.
  • The Bennies regained the lead when Presley Kraemer scored at 1745 of the second period, making it 2-1.
  • In the final minute of the second, the Bennies tried to run out the clock along the boards in their own zone. The puck came free from the scrum behind the St. Benedict goal and MacLean pounced on the loose puck, wrapping it around the net and sliding it under Haack near the left post with 18.3 seconds left in the period.
  • Each team had chances in the third, with the Bennies outshooting the Yellowjackets 10-8, but it remained tied and went to overtime.
  • In the extra session, the Bennies outshot the Yellowjackets 4-2, but neither team could net the winner.
  • Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School), who assisted on the MacLean goal, opened the shootout with a goal, stickhandling into the zone before lifting a backhand past Haack.
  • With a chance to seal the shootout win, Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) entered the zone and after a fake, slid a forehand between Haack's pads to close the shootout.
The Yellowjackets will be back home Saturday when they enter Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play against UW-Eau Claire. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Wessman Arena in Superior.
