SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's basketball team was back on their home court for a midweek contest, taking on Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) competitor Hamline Wednesday. The 'Jackets fell in a tight contest with the MIAC's Macalester Saturday, and the Pipers displayed a balanced attack to win inside Mertz Mortorelli Gym by a 72-49 decision.
HU was led by Camille Cummings and Kate Trachsel, scoring 22 and 17 points respectively, to pace the Pipers to a road win.
Game Notes
- Hamline began with a quick layup just ten seconds into the contest to take an early lead, which was followed by a Yellowjacket foul to lead by three. Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) drained a three after receiving a pass from Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) to knot things up.
- Despite a missed three from MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset), the Yellowjackets got their first lead of the evening after Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in. Chloe Peterson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) followed with a jumper inside the paint to lead Hamline 9-5 past the midway point of the first.
- The Pipers drew a pair of fouls to take the lead and never give it back for the remainder of the game. They would lead after the first ten minutes 14-9.
- Dobson nailed a jumper within the first two minutes of the second quarter, but Hamline continued to pour it on offensively. Cummings, alongside Sophie Stork and Marina LaFreniere helped steer the ship and lead by as much as 19 points.
- Peterson began to heat up in the final minutes of play. She hit a jumper at 32-15 before drawing a steal and finishing her layup on a fast break.
- After the Pipers added to their lead, Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) grabbed a rebound before Besonen nailed a shot beyond the arc and brought UWS within 14 at 34-20.
- In the beginning minutes of the third, Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) missed a jumper inside the paint but redeemed herself by converting on her next attempt after a pass from Dobson.
- The Yellowjackets continued to chip away, but Hamline's offense kept their intensity. They would force a handful of steals and capitalize on Yellowjacket miscues to lead 54-32 after the third.
- Besonen hit a pair of three pointers in the fourth, while Hailie Evans (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) checked into the game and dished out assists to Dobson on back-to-back shots. She would draw a foul with 95 seconds remaining and nail both free throw attempts.
- Chloe Hansen (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) would score the final points for UWS, but the 'Jackets would fall 72-49 inside the Mertz.
- Besonen and Dobson finished with 18 and 14 points, respectively. Leccia and Peterson each had six and five rebounds, leading the defensive efforts.
The Yellowjackets return home Saturday, taking on St. Catherine in non-conference play. The opening tipoff is set for 3 p.m. inside Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
