St. Scholastica Topples Yellowjackets in Overtime

DULUTH, Minn. – When the Yellowjacket women's hockey team and St. Scholastica met for an exhibition game at Wessman Arena in October, the teams skated to a 0-0 tie.

There was no scoring through 60 minutes of regulation play. There was no scoring through a five-minute overtime, either. If the teams had decided to play a shootout, there's no telling how many rounds it would have gone.

The teams met for the first time in the 2024-25 regular season Tuesday night, and there's no way the teams would take that long to score this time around, right?

Well, the teams again played 60 minutes of scoreless regulation hockey, but early in the extra session St. Scholastica converted a shot from the right circle to pick up the 1-0 win at MARS Lakeview Arena.

After the defeat, the Yellowjackets are 4-5-1 overall to go along with a 1-2-0 record in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

The Yellowjackets appeared poised to get the win late in regulation, as they went on the power play with just over two minutes to play, but St. Scholastica killed off the penalty without allowing the Yellowjackets to mount much of an attack. Then in the overtime period, Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) had the best opportunity for the Yellowjackets, taking off on a partial breakaway, but the Saints were able to get back on defense and thwart the opportunity.

Moments after Hoops' opportunity, Grace Chapman took a shot from the right circle that eluded the glove of Yellowjacket goaltender Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) to give the Saints the win. The goal came 1:07 into overtime.

Game Notes
  • The Yellowjackets outshot the Saints 34-27 in the game.
  • St. Scholastica blocked 10 shots, compared to six for the Yellowjackets.
  • Coupled with her performance last Friday against Northland, Black had a shutout streak of 121:07 before the St. Scholastica game winner. It is the longest shutout streak of her collegiate career.
  • The Yellowjackets were 0-for-2 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill Tuesday.
  • Tuesday marked the third time the Yellowjackets have played on a Tuesday this season.
  • Hoops, Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) all had five shots on goal to lead the Yellowjackets.
  • Black finished with 26 saves, a season high.
  • The Yellowjackets lead the all-time series with the Saints, 14-10-1, but St. Scholastica has won the three of the last four meetings.
  • The Yellowjackets and Saints will meet again Jan. 3 on the first day of the Marian Holiday Classic in Fond du Lac, Wis.
After playing 10 games in 26 days to open the season, the Yellowjackets will now get a small break before re-entering WIAC play. The Yellowjackets are off until Sunday, Dec. 7 when they travel to UW-Eau Claire to take on the Blugolds. The opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Center.
