Volleyball Claims 3-1 Victory over Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. – The Yellowjacket volleyball team hit the road for its final Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season road trip of 2024, with its first stop at LSC Gymnasium for a meeting with Martin Luther. Earlier in the year, the 'Jackets needed four sets to defeat the Knights 3-1 inside Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Friday's script was quite similar, as the 'Jackets downed Martin Luther 3-1 for their 22nd win of the season.

Match Notes
  • Superior leaped out to an early 6-1 lead after Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity) and Ayla Oltmanns (Gilbert, Minn./Duluth East) logged the first two kills of the match. A slew of attack errors saw the Yellowjackets build their lead before the Knights came within two at 10-8.
  • Smith and Oltmanns, alongside Maiana Stark (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) would register kills to regain a seven-point advantage before UWS cruised through the first set with a 25-15 victory.
  • The Yellowjackets garnered another 6-1 lead in the second set, this time getting kills from Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford), Stark and Oltmanns. Addy Gangl (Nashwauk, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) joined the mix with a kill at 13-6 before carding a solo block for back-to-back points.
  • A combination of attack errors from MLC saw the Yellowjackets end the second set with a 25-14 win.
  • The Knights turned things up a notch in the third set, forcing a match-high six lead changes. After falling 6-3, Martin Luther fought to take the lead at 12-11 after a combination of kills and Yellowjacket attack errors.
  • Midway through the set the Knights found their groove, scoring eight-of-ten points to earn a third set victory at 25-17.
  • Set number four saw both teams fighting for an early lead until Stark logged a kill at 4-3, leading to UWS scoring 13-of-16 points to lead 18-7. The Knights would log three points, but the Yellowjackets ended the match with six consecutive points to win 25-10 and take the match.
  • UWS swung at a .257 clip, with set number two marking a .406 percentage.
  • Stark finished with 16 kills, while Gangl and Oltmanns logged 11 and seven, respectively.
  • Jenna Anderson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) paced the 'Jacket defense, grabbing 24 digs while Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) and Hohbein ended their evening with 18 and 15, respectively.
