RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Generating offense has been a season-long struggle for the Yellowjacket men's hockey team, and Saturday's game was no exception.
Â
Following Friday's loss at UW-River Falls, the Yellowjackets entered Saturday's game with their collective back against the wall, needing to win the regulation game and a mini game to keep their season alive. Unfortunately, as has been the case so many times this year, the Yellowjackets weren't able to do enough offensively to get a win and save their season.
Â
UW-River Falls scored 2:25 into the third period, and that was enough to defeat the Yellowjackets 1-0 at W.H. Hunt Arena in River Falls.
Â
The loss brings the 2023-24 season to a close for the Yellowjackets.
Â
River Falls' Aidan Torres scored the games lone goal, taking a shot from the left point that got through traffic and beat Yellowjacket goaltender
Jack Boschert (Florissant, Mo./Duchesne) low to the glove side.
Â
As the third period progressed, the Yellowjackets played with more urgency and pulled Boschert with just under three minutes to play, but the extra attacker couldn't help them get the equalizing goal.
Â
Game Notes
- Boschert was making his second straight start and finished the game with 38 saves, marking a season high.
- The Yellowjackets were shut out for the seventh time this season, the most in a single season since 2016-17. The Yellowjackets scored one goal or less 13 times this season.
- For the weekend, the Yellowjackets took just four penalties, and the penalty kill took care of all of them. The penalty finished the season on a streak, killing 21 of their last 22 opportunities.
- The Yellowjackets had just nine seconds of power play time Saturday.
- Collin Pederson (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna Senior) had a team-high four shots on goal Saturday, while Jordan Guiney (Victoria, British Columbia/Belmont Secondary School), in his final game with the Yellowjackets, had three.
The Yellowjackets finish the season 11-15-1.
