Eau Claire Completes Sweep of Yellowjackets

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – After dropping the series-opening contest to UW-Eau Claire Friday afternoon, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team had a steep mountain to climb to keep their season alive.

Down 1-0 to the Blugolds, the Yellowjackets would have to win twice Saturday – first win the actual game, either in regulation in overtime, and then follow that with a victory in the mini game to prolong the season and send the Yellowjackets to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship game next week.

UW-Eau Claire had no interest in entertaining such drama.

The Blugolds scored three times on the power play and went on to defeat the Yellowjackets 4-1 at the Hobbs Ice Center Saturday afternoon.

UW-Eau Claire notched its first power play goal with under five minutes to go in the first when Ava Bullert beat Rose Beeman (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's School) to make it 1-0. Sophie Rausch, who victimized the Yellowjackets for four goals in the series opener, added another power play goal early in the second period, which ended up being the eventual game winner. Eden Gruber made it 3-0 with 3:15 to play in the second.

The Yellowjackets had a chance to cut into the lead midway through the third period, but Kailey Swerhun (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius) was denied on the breakaway. Shortly after Swerhun's opportunity, Rausch added her second of the game at 12:23 of the third to increase the lead to 4-0.

With just over a minute to go in the game the Yellowjackets broke the Eau Claire shutout bid. After missing the breakaway earlier Swerhun made good this time, converting a power play to make the final score 4-1.

Beeman finished the game with 44 saves.

Game Notes
  • Darbie Mattson (Atikokan, Ontario/Atikokan) and Gaby Andreacchi (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick) assisted on Swerhun's goal.
  • All three of the Yellowjackets who teamed up on the goal come from Ontario.
  • Andreacchi posted eight points on the year after not registering a point in her first 10 games.
  • With 44 saves, Beeman stopped 40-or-more shots for the fifth time this season.
  • Yellowjacket seniors include Beeman, Swerhun, Jordann Swingle (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral), Jada LeBlanc (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute), Andrea Stelling (Sioux Falls, S.D./Eaton Rapids (Mich.)), Evelyn Andrade (Boise, Idaho/California) and Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School).
The Yellowjackets close the season with a record of 8-18-1.
