SUPERIOR, Wis.—The Yellowjacket softball team took the field Saturday afternoon facing Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) competitor Crown College for a doubleheader.
The Yellowjackets opened the weekend series with an 8-0 shutout Friday, the complete the sweep Saturday, winning by scores of 10-2 and 16-3. The 'Jackets are now sitting 13-6 overall, and 5-0 (UMAC).
All five of the Yellowjackets' pitchers would see time in the circle Saturday.
Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) (3-1) would be credited as the winning pitcher for the first game and
Georgia Youngblood (Ray, Mich./Lutheran North) (1-0) would earn the win for the second game.
Game One Notes
- The Polars would take the lead early in the game. In the first inning Sydney Gardner would hit a homerun to center field scoring Emmy Romport giving Crown a 2-0 lead.
- Crown's lead did not last for long, as the 'Jackets would score four in the second inning, taking the lead 4-2.
- Indigo Fish (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) had an RBI in the third inning and would double down the left field line scoring Ellie Macal (Winona, Minn./Cotter).
- Zoe Thomson (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) had an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park), putting the Yellowjackets ahead 6-2.
- Norah Schmitz (Carver County, Minn./Waconia) would bring in the first run of the fifth inning after hitting a double to right field. Schmitz would score Lily Hanson (Cloquet, Minn./Esko), earning the RBI.
- Snyder would continue the scoring with a single to center field. Snyder would advance Camille Wikstrom (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) to second and scored Schmitz.
- Thomson's ground ball to the shortstop would end the game for the Yellowjackets bringing in Wikstrom for a final score of 10-2.
- Getting the start was Emma Pillion (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), she would pitch 2.0 innings and Swartz would pitch the remainder, allowing just one hit.
Game Two Notes
- The Yellowjackets would take the lead early in the first inning, bringing in four runs. Helping take the lead, MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) would double down the left field line. Leccia would score Fish, and Thomson for two RBI.
- The second inning the 'Jackets would give themselves a generous lead over the Polars, scoring nine runs on six hits to move in front 13-0.
- The Polars would score their only runs of the game in the third inning, bringing in three across the plate.
- In the third inning for the Yellowjackets, Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) tripled to right field for two RBI, scoring Karen Balabon (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Hanson.
- In the third inning, Kendallyn Kalenberg (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) singled up the middle, bringing Hoops home and giving the 'Jackets a 16-3 lead.
- Bella Garley (Albuquerque, N.M./Porter (Tex.)) would start the game off allowing two hits, zero runs, zero batters walked and had two strike outs. Youngblood would finish the remainder of the game allowing two hits, zero runs and zero errors. Youngblood's record is now 1-0 in the circle.
The Yellowjackets are back in action with a quick turnaround as they will face the Blue Devils of UW-Stout for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9. First pitch at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex is set for 1 p.m., the second game will follow for a 3 p.m. start.
