MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Yellowjacket men's soccer team commenced its regular season on the road Friday, traveling down I-35 south to take on Augsburg. Over the years both squads have produced multiple close matches, usually coming down to the wire.
Friday's match was no different, as the 'Jackets and Auggies duked it out for a full 90 minutes, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, resulting in a 0-0 tie.
This is the first time UWS and Augsburg played to a scoreless draw, dating back to the 1998 season.
Match Notes
- The Yellowjackets rifled a pair of shots to Auggie goalkeeper Frankie Pinto courtesy of Jake Kidd (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Felipe Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Soma), but neither shot snuck past the goal line.
- Augsburg led the first half with seven total shots, while the 'Jackets fired four.
- Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), the Yellowjackets' all-time leader in career shutouts, got the start in net Friday. He ended the first half of play with two saves, while Pinto carded three.
- Tensions began to rise in the second half, as seven total yellow cards were issued to both teams.
- Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) and Isaac Becket (Surrey, England/The Sixth Form College Farnborough) ended their nights with three shots apiece. Kidd accounted for two, while Oliveira tallied the other.
- Four Yellowjackets played a full 90 minutes, while two Auggies saw action for the full contest.
- Paredes ended his night with eight saves, while Pinto saved five.
UW-Superior will play its first home match of the season Friday, taking on Carleton College. The opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth, Minn.
