Yellowjackets Roll Past LumberJills

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's basketball team played host to their third Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) game of the season, welcoming Northland College to the Twin Ports. Superior opened circuit play with two wins after facing a tough non-conference slate, and after 15 different Yellowjackets combined in the box score Wednesday, logged their third UMAC victory over the LumberJills.

UWS had three players finish in double-digits, courtesy of Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek), Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) and Hailie Evans (Proctor, Minn./Proctor).

Game Notes
  • The 'Jackets assumed control from the start, scoring the first 12 points. Besonen accounted for half, while the other six points were courtesy of Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley).
  • Northland logged their first four points before Besonen and Dobson converted back-to-back long balls. Emily Dehler (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy) and Chloe Peterson (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) also hit shots beyond the arc in the second half of the first quarter, allowing UWS to lead 23-4.
  • The LumberJills responded as the scoreboard neared zeros, but Dehler sent a pass to Peterson as she logged another trey to end the quarter. Her shot beyond the arc gave the Yellowjackets an 18-point advantage at 26-8.
  • Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) logged some points in the opening minutes of the second, as the Yellowjackets extended their lead. Action continued as Reese Aune (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) subbed in and hit a three pointer upon entrance to the hardwood, scoring the 40th point for Superior.
  • Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) hit a jumper with 36 seconds remaining, boosting the 'Jackets to a 29-point advantage heading into the intermission.
  • Besonen rattled off a pair of consecutive steal-and-scores to open the third. Dobson and Leccia later drained three pointers before the Yellowjackets closed with a layup from Latvala and a midrange jumper from Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis.), leading by 47 points.
  • Hailie Evans (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) checked into the game for the fourth quarter, and she logged a duo of jumpers for her first four points. Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) also logged a layup after drawing a steal from the opposition.
  • After drawing a foul past the midway point of the fourth, Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) garnered two points from the line that gave the 'Jackets a 50 point lead.
  • Action continued and Sydney Crawford (Wausau, Wis./Wausau Area) logged her first collegiate points, scoring back-to-back three pointers after receiving assists from Chloe Hansen (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) and Claude.
  • Evans paced the final Yellowjacket points, securing the victory at 89-33.
  • Besonen led with 15 points, while Evans and Dobson logged 10.
