SUPERIOR, Wis. – Following a five-game road trip, the Yellowjacket women's basketball team returned home Wednesday, playing host to North Central to open both the 2025 calendar year and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season slate. After falling in their first four contests of the road span, the 'Jackets hopped back in the win column with a 15-point cushion over MSOE.
Wednesday's contest with the Rams saw Superior jump ahead early and never look back, garnering their second win in a row along with their first win of the second half by a 71-55 decision.
Four Yellowjackets finished with double-digit figures, leading the charge to begin league action on the right foot.
Game Notes
- The Rams got ahead with a jumper, but after three pointers from Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) and MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) they took a 6-2 lead and never surrendered.
- Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) hopped in the scoring late in the first quarter, receiving a pass from Emily Dehler (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy) to nail a jumper inside the paint to lead the Rams 16-6.
- North Central came within eight on multiple occasions in the second, but Superior kept applying the offensive pressure. Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley), along with Dobson and Dehler helped lead the charge and finish the first half at 30-22.
- Superior executed a 25-point third quarter, extending the lead and taking advantage of opposing miscues. Reese Aune (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) drew a foul late in the third and drained both free throws for her first points, while Dehler, Ferstl and Leccia displayed a balanced attack.
- Leading 55-37, the Rams began to slowly chip away. They came within 12 at 66-54, but the damage had already been done as UWS logged its second win in a row, beginning league action with a 71-55 win.
- Leccia and Dobson each shot 50 percent from the field Wednesday. Leccia led with 15 points, while Dobson trailed with 14.
- Olson logged 13 points in the contest, who was followed by Ferstl with 12.
- Defensively the Yellowjackets had 31 rebounds. Dobson, Olson and Ferstl each contributed six boards.
- Superior scored 23 points off turnovers, compared to North Central's seven.
The Yellowjackets continue UMAC play Saturday, hitting the road once again to face Bethany Lutheran. The opening tipoff is set for 4:45 inside North Gymnasium in Mankato, Minn.
