Men’s Basketball Loses Nail Biter to the Rams

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Yellowjacket men's basketball team closed out the week with a nail biter between the North Central Rams. The 'Jackets were looking to continue their win streak in conference play, but despite outscoring the Rams in the second half, they weren't able to pull off the victory.

The Rams started out the scoring with an 8-0 run before the Yellowjackets were able to put some points on the board. Superior was able to slowly make their way up in points but that didn't stop the Rams. By halftime, the Yellowjackets were down 39-33 hoping to come out of the break with some fire.

While the Yellowjackets were able to outscore the Rams in the second half, it wasn't enough to secure the win, losing the game 79-76.

Game Notes
  • After the Rams scored eight unanswered points, J'Vaun Walker (Rosharon, Texas/Manvel) was fouled, getting the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard.
  • The Yellowjackets received a break when Andrew Beers (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) would be fouled, earning him two free throws to make the score 10-15.
  • There would then be an almost two-minute stretch of straight defense which was ended by a layup from the Rams.
  • The Rams would then create a commanding 15-point lead before the Yellowjackets started crawling their way to make the score close, as Reid Johnson (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) helped lead the charge with multiple layups and jumpers.
  • By halftime the Yellowjackets were in a six-point deficit, sitting at 39-33.
  • Early in the second half, the Yellowjackets were able to get within two points before the Rams hit a three-pointer to extend their lead.
  • The Yellowjackets would take the lead after a Beers "and one" layup making the score 57-54.
  • UWS was able to create a five-point lead with less than six minutes to go. Walker, along with Joey Barker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) aided this effort.
  • With just under three minutes left the Rams retook the lead, eventually going into the final minute winning by six.
  • The Yellowjackets were able to claw their way back, but it wouldn't be enough as the Rams were able to seal the win with two made free throws.
  • Superior had four players in double-digit figures, and Walker led the charge with 22. Reid Johnson (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) followed with 19, while Beers and T.J. Moberg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) garnered 13 and ten, respectively.

UWS is set for a home midweek matchup against the Northwestern Eagles Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
