UW-Superior Falls to No. 1 UW-River Falls

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team played No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls on Saturday at Wessman Arena for a lone game this weekend to wrap up the three-game season series. Despite a determined effort, the Yellowjackets were unable to slow down the Falcons, falling 7-2.

The loss drops UW-Superior to 9-9-2 overall and 1-6-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) made 47 saves in goal for the Yellowjackets, facing heavy offensive pressure from the Falcons. Black, now 6-5-1 on the season, kept UWS in the game, but UW-River Falls' depth proved too much to handle.

Game Notes
  • UW-River Falls struck early, opening the scoring just over a minute into the game. Megan Goodreau was dished a pass in the slot and fired a shot through the Yellowjacket defender and past Black's blocker to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
  • Less than three minutes later, Allisen Carothers extended the lead, with a low shot from the point through traffic in front of the net.
  • Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) got the Yellowjackets on the board at 15:17 of the first period, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) fired a shot on the net where Garner had a beautiful tip in front of the net putting the puck past the UWRF goaltender.
  • UW-River Falls responded quickly, converting on the power play in the final minute of the first to take a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
  • The Falcons controlled the second period, scoring three unanswered goals to stretch their advantage to 6-1.
  • Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) scored shorthanded for UW-Superior at 10:54 of the third, but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback. Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) and Booth broke down the ice on a breakaway, Hoops passed the puck across the slot to Booth who fired the puck past the UWRF goaltender on the backdoor.
  • Madison Kadrlik sealed the game for UW-River Falls with a power-play goal at 6:30 of the third, completing a hat trick.
  • The Yellowjackets were forced to kill off six penalties to UWRF two.
The Yellowjackets are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 4 with a quick turnaround for more WIAC action when they host UW-Eau Claire. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
