STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team went toe-to-toe with UW-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon. However, a power-play goal in overtime lifted the Pointers to a 4-3 victory at K.B. Willett Arena.
With the loss, the Yellowjackets drop to 9-12-2 overall and 1-9-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play.
Goaltender
Molly Black (Devils Lake, N.D./Devils Lake) finished the game with 23 saves. Black is now 6-6-1 on the season.
Game Notes
- Superior wasted no time getting on the board, as Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) scored just 20 seconds into the game off assists from Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Anna Scherling (Rogers, Minn./Rogers). However, the Pointers answered back at 7:53 when Maddie Andrle found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1.
- The teams continued to trade goals in the first period, with Avery Olenik (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) restoring the UWS lead at 10:20, only for Avery Engbrecht to pull UWSP even once again at 15:39.
- Superior regained the lead early in the second period as Scherling capitalized just 52 seconds in. But special teams proved pivotal, with Courtney Leising converting on the power play at 14:30 to tie the game 3-3.
- After a scoreless third period, the game headed to overtime, where a UWS penalty proved costly. On the ensuing power play, Molly Pohlkamp netted the game-winner at 4:10 of the extra frame, handing the Pointers the win.
- UWS outshot UWSP 39-27, but timely scoring and special teams were the difference, as the Pointers converted 2-of-5 power plays, while the Yellowjackets went 0-for-4.
The Yellowjackets will return to action on Friday, Feb. 21, for their final regular-season series when they travel to Northland. Puck drop is set for Friday at 6 p.m. at the Bay Area Civic Center.
