Yellowjackets Win One, Drop One on Final Day of Saint Paul Tournament

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Yellowjacket volleyball team wrapped up the Saint Paul Tournament Saturday, facing off against Hamline and Central (Iowa). After splitting a pair of matches Friday evening, the 'Jackets were on the winning side of a five-set thriller against the Pipers inside the Hutton Arena before returning to the Butler Center and falling 3-1 to the Dutch.

Match One Notes
  • Superior obtained a six-point lead early off the swings of Marena Saeger (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity). The Pipers ultimately came back and orchestrated a few mid-set rallies to lead 18-14, but the 'Jackets tied things up and utilized five consecutive points after Sidney Bader (Milltown, Wis./Unity), Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior), and Kate Jamtgaard (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) helped secure a 25-22 win.
  • Set number two was closely contested in the opening stages. Chesney Phillipp (Jacksonville, N.C./Holdingford) logged the first point for the Yellowjackets and both teams proceeded to volley the lead until a 10-10 tie came about. The Pipers logged five straight points on two separate occasions to lead 23-14 before seven points favored UWS, including a pair of service aces from Gabi Schwirtz (Plato, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake), but HU logged their final two points to lead 25-21.
  • The third set saw Hamline hold an early lead before they pulled away at 16-8. After a pair of Piper miscues, Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) generated three straight kills and added two more in their next rally to lead 21-19.
  • The Pipers came within one point to secure the third set win, but a costly attack error resulted in the Yellowjackets logging kills from Smith and Bader to win 27-25.
  • UWS couldn't muster much offense in the fourth, ultimately resulting in their win to force a fifth set. Kyndra Peterson (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale), Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) and Smith all logged kills throughout the fourth.
  • Hamline stepped in front 8-3 in the fifth, but with a combination of Piper errors and Yellowjacket kills, UWS came within one at 10-9. Jamtgaard logged a kill before a pair of Schwirtz aces and kills from Saeger and Maddie Hunter (Anoka, Minn./Anoka), and after a pair of Piper points, Hohbein shut the door and earned the set victory at 15-13.
  • Claude finished with 26 digs to lead defensively. Hohbein logged 20 kills and 20 digs throughout the match, while Bader and Smith followed with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

Match Two Notes
  • In their final match of the day, the Yellowjackets faced the Dutch of Central College. Central took an early 7-4 lead and held on until three 'Jacket kills saw them all tied up at 12-12. From there both teams exchanged points and the lead until the Dutch fired two kills to win 25-23.
  • Both teams volleyed the advantage in the second set. Kills from Schwirtz and Phillipp came early on until both teams logged multiple rallies. At 18-18, the Yellowjackets advanced their lead to as many as 22 before the Dutch rolled to a 25-22 win after six-straight points.
  • UW-Superior dominated the third set. After taking a 6-1 lead the Yellowjackets never looked back and rolled to a 25-7 win. Peterson, Hunter, and Jones each provided the offensive push to force a fourth set.
  • Midway through the fourth Central logged seven consecutive points and rolled from there. The 'Jackets continued to push the envelope, but the Dutch emerged victorious in the fourth 25-13 to win the match 3-1.
  • Bader and Hohbein led with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Hering finished with 19 digs while Hohbein logged 14 of her own.

The Yellowjackets will now enter the UW-La Crosse Invitational, set for Friday and Saturday. Their first of four matches comes against the Norse of Luther College, which is set for 5 p.m. inside Mitchell Hall.
