Yellowjacket Comeback Falls Short as Minnesota Morris Wins 80-78

MORRIS, Minn. - Coming off the tough loss to Northwestern on Wednesday, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team looked to bounce back against Minnesota Morris. Much like Wednesday, the 'Jackets comeback attempt came up short as they fell to the Cougars 80-78.

Game Notes:

  • Hayden Quimby (Menasha, Wis./Xavier) and Caiden Lecce (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic) got the 'Jackets going offensively with a pair of three point makes before the Cougars were able to gain the early advantage.

  • The Cougars found themselves up eight points, but a Nick Nordaune (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) layup, Gage Braiedy (Mora, Minn./Mora) three pointer and Rocco Paulson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) layup tied the game at 28. The Cougars were able to regain the lead going into halftime with the score being 37-31.

  • Early in the second half the Cougars by ten but three straight layups by Evan Bennett (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Lecce brought the lead down to six.

  • The Cougars found themselves their largest lead at 11 points, but the 'Jackets began to chip away as Braiedy, Nordaune, Andrew Beers (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) and Nathan Deprez (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) scored to get the lead to five.

  • The rest of the contest saw the Cougars and 'Jackets spend a lot of time at the free throw line with Superior attempting to get back into the game. Superior was able to make it interesting down the stretch as Nordaune buried a three pointer with four seconds left.

  • Matt Thompson stepped up to the free throw line and sunk one, but that was enough to secure the win as Nordaune's half-court heave came up short.

  • Braiedy led the Yellowjackets in scoring with 16 points while Nordaune scored 13 and Lecce scored 12.

  • For Minnesota Morris Carvin Fish led all scorers with 27 points.

Superior (5-13, 1-4 UMAC) returns to the court on Wednesday as they host Crown. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. inside Mortorelli Gymnasium.
