Superior Claims Huge 3-1 Victory over Minnesota Morris

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket volleyball team won their fifth Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) match in a row Friday, taking down a gritty Minnesota Morris squad in a marathon of a 3-1 contest.

Match Notes
  • In the opening set, the 'Jackets led 6-4 before the Cougars switched momentum and established a four-point advantage at 15-11. Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) logged a kill and later joined forces with Melissa Hoff (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) to deny a Cougar kill.
  • Despite offensive efforts from Hoff, Aspen Gentele (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) and Hohbein, the Cougars claimed set one 25-23.
  • Set two saw both teams volley the lead and points early on, but Superior logged eight points in a row. Back-to-back kills from Kyndra Peterson (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) and Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity) gave way for Hohbein and Alaina Wilberg (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) to log kills, giving the Yellowjackets a 25-15 win in the second.
  • Despite kills from Gentele, Hoff, Peterson and Hohbein early in the third, Minnesota Morris turned it on and garnered a six-point lead at 18-12. Superior would counter, however, leveling the match at 23-23 before scoring the final three points of the set for a 27-25 win.
  • The Cougars came out with a 5-1 lead in the fourth and ultimately a 14-7 edge. Hoff, alongside Kate Jamtgaard (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), began a rally that saw Superior take seven-of-eight points and close in for the lead.
  • As both teams fought tooth and nail to claim the set or match point, momentum shifted drastically in the last bit of the fourth. Down 30-29, the Yellowjackets saw kills from Jamtgaard and a service ace from Hoff. To close things out, Jamtgaard and Smith logged back-to-back kills for a fourth set victory at 33-31, boosting the Yellowjackets to victory.
  • Hohbein garnered her second milestone as a Yellowjacket, as she logged her 1,000th Yellowjacket kill on the evening after logging her 1,000th collegiate dig in last week's tournament action. She ended Friday's match with 22 kills and 14 digs.
  • Peterson and Gentele each logged 10 kills, while Smith led with six blocks.
  • Carlie Lohman (South Range, Wis./Superior) fired 34 assists while Alayna Schultz (Atwater, Minn./Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City) had 17 and Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior) added six.
  • Hering led with 39 digs on the evening, her second highest of the campaign to-date.

The Yellowjackets will travel to take on RV St. Olaf on Wednesday. The opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Bob Gelle Court at Skoglund Center.
