Yellowjackets Cruise Past Vikings 3-0

MANKATO, Minn. – The Yellowjacket volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Bethany Lutheran on Friday evening, securing their 10th win on the season in 13 matches.

Match Notes
  • The 'Jackets came out to an early 12-2 lead in the opening set, as kills from Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford), Kyndra Peterson (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) and Melissa Hoff (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) led the way. The Vikings would slowly regain their stride, but with a combination of blocks from Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity) and kills from Kate Jamtgaard (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), they ultimately held out the opener with a 25-21 win.
  • The second set saw both teams trade points and the lead early. Aspen Gentele (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) and Smith would join forces for an early block, while Taylor Tollefson (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) and Hohbein added kills of their own midway through the set.
  • A trio of kills from Hohbein, Tollefson and Peterson gave the 'Jackets the second wind they needed, as they rolled to five consecutive points for a 25-17 victory in the second set.
  • UWS began with a 7-3 lead in the third, utilizing Viking errors to their advantage while providing a mix of offensive and defensive efforts. Two six-point rallies guided the 'Jackets to a sweep of the Vikings, as Alayna Schultz (Atwater, Minn./Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City) would log a pair of service aces before Smith would generate back-to-back kills at 21-9. From there, Hohbein and Peterson shut the door and earned a third-set score of 25-13.
  • Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior) led with 18 digs, while Alaina Wilberg (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) had 10 and Hohbein garnered eight.
  • Hohbein led in the kills department with 12, while Peterson and Hoff followed with nine and eight, respectively.

The Yellowjackets are back in action Saturday where they take on Martin Luther. The opening serve is set for 11 a.m. inside the LSC Gymnasium.
