SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket men's hockey team opened the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament on Saturday, playing host to UW-Stevens Point. Following a physical end to the regular season between both teams, they would meet again to fight for a semifinal game with the top-seeded Blue Devils of UW-Stout. Following another tough matchup, the Pointers held on and defeated the 'Jackets 2-1, advancing to the next round of the tournament while ending Superior's campaign.
Game Notes
- Just 39 seconds into the game, Alec Hamady fired a shot past Yellowjacket goaltender Jan Skorpik (Brandýs nad Labem, Czechia/OA Prague) after receiving a pass from Sean Bunting.
- In the midway of period two, the 'Jackets leveled the scoring after Dusty Bergstrom (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) set up Ikki Kogawa (Chiba, Japan/Collingwood Collegiate Institute) for a goal at 11:49.
- Both teams created good opportunities, but timely defense and strong goaltending kept the game level going into the third period.
- Alex Johnson fired a shot from the left circle after receiving a pass from Blake Norris and Nico Chmelevski, serving as the ultimate game-winner.
- Superior would opt for an extra skater late, and despite a barrage of shots sent towards UWSP goalie Alex Proctor, the Pointers defense came up big and sent them to the next round of the WIAC Tournament.
- Skorpik made 27 saves in net taking the loss. His record for the season falls to 8-7-1.
The Yellowjackets end the 2025-26 season at 13-11-2 overall with a 6-8-1 mark in the WIAC.
