Superior Takes Two From St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. - The Yellowjacket softball team crossed the bridge Wednesday for a midweek matchup with St. Scholastica. The Yellowjackets came away with two victories in matchup winning 9-1 and 17-7.  

Game 1 Notes: 

  • In the second, Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg) launched a three-run shot to put the 'Jackets up 4-0.  

  • Superior tacked on two more in the third as Kylie Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) brought home Karen Balabon (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) before she came into score courtesy of an RBI single from Sophia Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead).  

  • Leccia added another RBI in the fourth bring in Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park). In the sixth the 'Jackets added their final two runs starting with an RBI single from Balabon. Delaney Johnson (Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth) would bring in Leccia to make it 9-0. 

  • The Saints were able to muster one run of Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) in the sixth, but that is all she would allow. Mitchell pitched all six innings, allowing only four hits and striking out five batters.  

Game 2 Notes: 

  • CSS scored first, getting two runs in the bottom of the first.  

  • In the second Otto squared things up driving in Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) and Zwak. Snyder would give the 'Jackets the lead scoring to make it 3-2.  

  • Superior added three runs in the fifth starting with an RBI double from Snyder. Leccia would trade places with Snyder before she was driven in by Balabon.  

  • CSS added a run in the fifth to cut the Superior lead to 6-3.  

  • The 'Jackets answered back in the sixth as Stuckmayer drove in Kylie Hochsprung (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North).  

  • Superior broke things open in the seventh Tessa Twedt (Brookings, S.D./Brookings) singled in Leccia. Maya Anderson (Cambridge, Minn./Totino-Grace) would come into score later before Bennett brought home Balabon to make it 10-3.  

  • Stuckmayer would draw a walk with the bases loaded making it 11-3 before Snyder would bring in Otto to make it 12-3. The 'Jackets would continue to go station to station as Leccia singled in Bennett. 

  • Hanna Hovland (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and launch a grand slam giving Superior the 17-3 lead. The Saints would score four in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late as the Yellowjackets would close things out.  

  • Bethany Lewis (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) earned the win in the circle, pitching four and a third and allowing three runs. Mitchell and Georgia Youngblood (Ray, Mich./Lutheran North) pitched the final two innings for UWS.  

The Yellowjackets now turn their attention to a weekend set with Minnesota Morris. First pitch between the two squads is set for 4 p.m. Friday at the Morris Softball Complex.
