Softball Downs Morris, Falls to Northwestern in Season Finale

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The Yellowjacket softball team took down the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars by a 3-1 decision Friday, before falling to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament-host Eagles of Northwestern 5-4 to close the 2026 campaign.

Game One Notes

  • The Yellowjackets used a pair of homers to muscle their way past the Cougars, as MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning before Peyton Bennett (Harrisburg, S.D./Harrisburg) hit a solo shot to go up by 3-0 in the bottom half of the fourth.

  • From there, the Cougars utilized an RBI triple in the fifth inning but were unable to touch home anymore, having their season come to a close.

  • Both Leccia and Bennett led with two hits apiece, while the fifth Yellowjacket hit came off the bat of Sophia Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), a one-out single to left field.

  • Abby Mitchell (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) allowed just the one run off four Cougar hits to pick up her 14th win of the campaign.

Game Two Notes

  • Superior once again was on the board early with a two-run homer, this time off the bat of Larissa Snyder (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park). She plated Balabon who hit a one-out double to left center field.

  • Kate Trump of UNW responded in a big way, hitting a three-run shot to take a 3-2 lead after the first.

  • Leccia leveled the game at 3-3 following an RBI single to plate Snyder, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier.

  • The game remained tied until a sacrifice fly off the bat of Samantha Swartz (Antigo, Wis./Antigo) gave the 'Jackets a 4-3 advantage in the top of the sixth inning.

  • Northwestern scored two runs off two hits in their half of the sixth inning, regaining the lead at 5-4 and getting a one, two, three inning to advance to championship day.

  • Leccia led going 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.

The 'Jackets end the 2026 season with an overall record of 25-16.
