Volleyball Splits Stinger Classic Finale

SUPERIOR, Wis. – On the second and final day of the Subway Stinger Classic, the Yellowjacket volleyball team suffered a three-set loss to UW-River Falls before rebounding nicely, defeating Augsburg 3-1 on Saturday.

Match One Notes
  • UWRF took an early 5-1 lead before Kate Jamtgaard (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) logged kills for Superior. Melissa Hoff (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) logged a solo block as well, but the Falcons would maintain a small margin of lead throughout the set.
  • At 16-11, the 'Jackets caught up with kills from Kyndra Peterson (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) and a handful of Falcon errors, but a pair of rallies gave UW-River Falls a 25-17 victory.
  • UWS led 6-2 in the second set after points from Jamtgaard and Hohbein, but a pair of five-point rallies boosted the Falcons in front. Despite kills from Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity), Hoff and Peterson, the Falcons emerged with a 25-19 win in set two.
  • In the third, the 'Jackets traded points with the Falcons early on until a five-point rally benefitted Superior, including kills from Hoff and Peterson and a service ace from Hohbein. At 22-19, UWRF rallied and came home with a 25-23 set victory.
  • Jamtgaard led the offensive charge with seven kills, followed by Hohbein and Peterson's five apiece.
  • Carlie Lohman (South Range, Wis./Superior) dished 13 assists, while Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior) logged 17 digs.

Match Two Notes
  • UW-Superior began the opening set with the Auggies on the right foot, leading by 9-4. Augsburg responded with a pair of kills and received some help from Yellowjacket errors, coming within one at 12-11.
  • In a back-and-forth battle for the lead throughout the remainder of the set, Taylor Tollefson (Pine City, Minn./Pine City), alongside Peterson and Hoff, spearheaded the Yellowjackets to a 27-25 win in the opener.
  • The 'Jackets and Auggies volleyed the momentum early until six consecutive points came for the Yellowjackets, leading 13-7. A pair of smaller rallies helped produce the momentum needed to win the second 25-15.
  • Augsburg responded in the third. After the Yellowjackets saw production from Tollefson, Hohbein and Smith to lead 20-11, the Auggies utilized a combination of kills and Yellowjacket attack errors to shift the momentum drastically, winning the third 25-23.
