Johnson comes to UW-Superior after coaching at NCAA Division III McMurry during the 2025-26 campaign, where he specialized in recruiting and scouting. Before embarking on his coaching career, Johnson had a five-year career at NCAA Division III Central College in Pella, Iowa. During his time with the Dutch, he was named to the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) First Team in 2022-23 and to its second team the following year.

During 2022-23, he was also the recipient of the Connie Muyskens MVP Award, awarded to the player making the best all-around performance in basketball and is based on ability, improvement, scholastic standing, sportsmanship and faithfulness in training.

A native of Van Meter, Iowa, Johnson concluded his collegiate playing career holding 12 spots in the Dutch record book. Out of those 12, he ranks first in four categories, including assists per game in a single season (6.3), most blocked shots in a single season (69), most blocked shots per game in a single season (2.8) and most blocked shots per game in a player's career (2.3).
