Men's Soccer Recruit: Jacob Friendt

Jacob Friendt

It's been a busy off-season for Yellowjacket men's soccer coach Joe Mooney, who has some big holes to fill on his roster due to the graduation of four players who were on the field for nearly every minute of the 2011 season.  This week, Mooney added his fourth recruit of the off-season, as Jacob Friendt has announced that he will be attending UW-Superior and suit up for the men's soccer team beginning in the fall of 2012.

Friendt will add instant offense to a Yellowjacket roster that graduated nearly 60% of the goals it scored in 2011.  One of those graduates, Thomas Shuldheisz (Andover, Minn./Andover), is an Andover alumnus as well.

A three-year letter winner at Andover, Friendt graduated as the all-time goal scoring leader for the Huskies, finding the net 50 times in his career.  He was the Huskies' offensive MVP for three straight seasons and three times was chosen as a member of the Northwest Suburban All-Conference Team.  In his senior season, Friendt had scored 13 goals in just 12 games before missing the remainder of the season with an injury.  His impact was noted, however, and even though he missed significant time, Friendt was still voted as a First Team All-State player in Minnesota.

Friendt's club team is the Plymouth Soccer Association (PSA), a program that has become a very active recruiting ground for the Yellowjackets.  Two other PSA members, Karl Schmidtke and John Little are teammates of Friendt and Yellowjacket commits.

Friendt was also chosen as a part of the 2008 ODP Regional Pool.

"We're very excited to have Jacob joining us.  He is a very talented player and has the potential to be a difference-maker right away.  He is crafty and explosive with the ball and he has a real nose for the net," Mooney said.  "Beyond that, Jacob is a great kid.  He comes from a family of soccer fans and I'm sure that they'll fit into our family here at UW-Superior very well."

A four-year honor student at Andover, Friendt said the academic opportunities presented to him at UW-Superior were a big factor in his decision.

"UW-Superior is a perfect school for me.  It has a great program for digital cinema track and video production, in which I plan to major," Friendt said.  "I am very excited to start playing soccer at the college level and start the next stage in my life."
