Eau Claire 3, Yellowjackets 0
On Wednesday night the Yellowjacket volleyball team headed south on Highway 53 and into the McPhee Center, where they would meet UW-Eau Claire in a WIAC match, seeking their second conference victory of the year. The Blugolds were anything but gracious hosts, sending the Yellowjackets home in straight sets by scores of 16-25, 17-25 and 23-25.
With the loss, the Yellowjackets have lost four of their past six matches and sit just one match over .500. The Blugolds, similarly, are just one match over .500, but they are now 4-1 in conference play and sit tied for second in the WIAC.
Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) (Mankato, Minn.) led the Yellowjackets with nine kills and a .350 attack percentage. Salann Gilbert (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) (Solon Springs, Wis.) added six kills and Emily Kadlec (Mora, Minn./Mora) (Mora, Minn.) and Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) (Stillwater, Minn.) had five apiece for the Yellowjackets, who as a team had an attack percentage of .148. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) had a team-high 25 set assists.
On defense, Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) led the way with 13 digs (she also had the only service ace of the match for the Yellowjackets), while Deadrick had 2.5 of the team's four blocks.
The Yellowjackets (11-10, 1-4 WIAC) are at home this weekend, hosting the 2011 Stinger Classic. They return to action on Friday, October 14 when they play Finlandia at 4:00 p.m. and Bethel at 8:00 p.m. at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
