Yellowjackets 3, Presentation 2
Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, but for the Yellowjackets, it was anything but. After winning impressively in a pair of matches on Saturday, the Yellowjackets were forced to fight from behind to keep their record perfect in Sunday's first match of the day against Presentation College out of Aberdeen, S.D.
The Yellowjackets dropped the first two sets to the Saints by scores of 22-25 and 27-29 before rallying to win the final three sets, and the match, by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 15-4. The victory kept the perfect start intact for the Yellowjackets, while Presentation remains winless.
As she was in the first match on Saturday, sophomore Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn.) was a leader offensively for the Yellowjackets, leading the team with a dozen kills and 32 total attacks. Freshman Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn.) also had another strong match, with eight kills and a team leading 21 set assists. Deadrick's attack percentage of .615 led the team, which collectively mustered only a .174 attack percentage, although they did improve significantly from the first set through the fifth. Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) (Mankato, Minn.) also had eight kills and led the team with four service aces, while Zimmerman had three.
Defensively, Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) (Esko, Minn) had a team-high 16 digs, while Zimmerman finished second on the team with ten. Freshmen Emily Kadlec (Mora, Minn./Mora) (Mora, Minn.) was credited with the only solo block of the match, while Rachel Langer (Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth) (Ellsworth, Wis.) had six block assists for the Yellowjackets, who had 11 blocks as a team.
Yellowjackets 3, Mount Mary 1
In the second match, the Yellowjackets took care of business quickly in the first set, winning 25-16, but Mount Mary came back and took the second set 15-25. From there it was all Yellowjackets, as they finished off the match by winning the final two sets 25-16 and 25-10 respectively and taking the match 3-1.
Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) (Stillwater, Minn.) led the Yellowjackets with nine kills, while Gosson was right behind her with eight, as the Yellowjackets attacked Mount Mary at a .208 percentage. For the fourth straight match, Deadrick led the Yellowjackets in service assists, notching 19. In the four matches on the weekend, Deadrick posted 87 service assists. Freshman setter Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) (Grantsburg, Wis.) finished the match with 12 assists.
Wirtz again led the charge defensively with 17 digs, while Deadrick and Zimmerman had eight digs apiece. The Yellowjackets had 50 digs in the four sets. The Yellowjackets had eight blocks as a team, with Gosson leading the way with four block assists. Salann Gilbert (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) (Solon Springs, Wis.), Deadrick and Langer had three block assists each.
UPDATE: Deadrick was named the tournament Most Valuable Player and she, along with Gosson, were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Yellowjackets finished in first place at the tournament, the only team to go 4-0 on the weekend. Below are the tournament standings.

The last time the Yellowjackts started the season 4-0 was 2006-07.
The Yellowjackets return to the court, on the road, September 9-10 when they travel to Oshkosh, Wis. to compete in the UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic. They will play Lakeland College at 5:30 p.m. and the University of Chicago at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Lawrence University at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The second match for Saturday will be determined at a later time.
