On Saturday afternoon, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team looked to stretch their WIAC-winning streak to three, but unfortunately UW-Whitewater had other ideas. The Warhawks were dominant on their home court and shot over 62% from the field for the game, routing the Yellowjackets 80-58.

WIAC Player of the Year candidate Chris Davis opened the scoring with a three-pointer 17 seconds in and Whitewater was off and running.  The Yellowjackets kept it close early, pulling to within three at 10-7 when Ben Aalfs (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) drained a three at about the five-minute mark of the first half.  From there the Warhawks took off, going on a 24-9 run and building the lead to as high as 18 points before heading to the locker room up 16 at 38-22.

Four players accounted for all of the scoring in the first half for the Yellowjackets, with Aalfs leading the way with eight points.  Trent Davis (Apple Valley, Minn./St. Bernard's) and Bronson Byrne (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) had six points each and Dustin Ritchie (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) had two.

In the second half the teams went back and forth in the opening minutes before Whitewater again took off.  A Davis layup at 11:14 increased the lead to 21 points.  The lead continued to grow, peaking at 26 points with just under two minutes to play in regulation.  Eric Effertz (Ladysmith, Wis./Ladysmith) closed out the scoring for the Yellowjackets, scoring on a layup with 1:21 to play.

Aalfs was the top scorer for the Yellowjackets with 15 points.  Brendan Bauer (Eleva, Wis./Gilmanton) was next, scoring 11 points while also pulling down a team-best five rebounds.  Ritchie led the Yellowjackets with four assists.  Byrne and Eric Holten (Barron, Wis./Barron) each had a block and Davis and Jarrod Peterson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) had two steals apiece to lead the Yellowjackets.

Chris Davis had a game-high 24 points for Whitewater.

The Yellowjackets (10-6, 4-3 WIAC) will play host to UW-River Falls on Wednesday, January 18.  Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gym will be 7:00 p.m.  The game can be viewed live on the web at www.ifan.tv.
