Box Score
Coming off a closely contested loss to#14 UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday, the UW-Superior women's basketball team faced an equally powerful opponent Saturday afternoon when the 12th ranked UW-Stevens Point Pointers entered Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium for a WIAC contest against the Yellowjackets.
Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, the Pointers proved to be too much for UW-Superior to handle as the Pointers jumped out an early lead and never looked back to pull away for an 85-67 win.
Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) got UW-Superior (9-10 overall, 3-8 WIAC) off to a good start, knocking down a jumper just seven seconds into the game to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 edge.
But the Pointers (17-3, 9-2) went on a 12-2 run over the next 3:34 to take a 12-4 lead on a layup by Myranda Tyler with 16:19 left in the opening half.
A basket by Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) and a free throw by Davis brought the Yellowjackets to within 12-7 with 14:51 remaining in first 20 minutes.
The Pointers would pull away over the next several minutes, upping their edge to 41-24 on another Tyler layup with 1:34 before heading into the intermission holding a 43-27 advantage.
UW-Superior cut the deficit to 48-33 early in the second half on a layup by Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) with 17:49 remaining in regulation.
The Yellowjackets would get no closer the rest of the way however as UW-Stevens Point built their lead to as many as 25 in the second half before taking home the victory.
UW-Superior was led by Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) with 13 points while Linzmeier added 12 and Davis 11 for the Yellowjackets.
The Pointers were paced by Sam Barber with game-high 25 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Averkamp added 16 points while Liz Althoff scored 13 and Cassie Bandow 12 for UW-Stevens Point.
Milestone Update: Hart is sitting at 977 points in her career and needs four points to jump into seventh place on the all-time scoring list. She also needs six rebounds to jump into sixth on the all-time rebounding list. Davis is 23 points from tying Lindsey Anderson for 12th on the all-time scoring list. She is 15 rebounds away from cracking the top ten all-time. Urmanski is nine points from jumping into 15th place all-time. She is also seven assists away from tying Katie Moench for eighth on the all-time list.
