Yellowjackets Fall in First Round of NCAA Tournament

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Yellowjackets women's basketball team commenced the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday as they played their pod host Concordia (Minn.). The Yellowjackets would stay in the fight against the Cobbers but ultimately fell 73-61.

Game Notes:

  • The Cobbers opened the game on a 9-0 run, but Abby Johnson (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) was able to get the scoring going for Superior. Buckets from the quartet of Maddie Reott (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), Hope Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Proctor), MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) and Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) allowed the 'Jackets to only trail by seven at the end of quarter one.

  • A score from Ferstl cut the Concordia lead to five, but the Cobbers again went on a run to regain control and lead at halftime by 12.

  • The Cobbers lead got to 15 in the third quarter, but Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) led the charge back into the game as UWS cut the deficit to three points. Concordia would go on a run to end the quarter leading by 11 heading into the final frame.

  • Johnson was able to get the Concordia lead down to seven in the fourth, but the Cobbers were able to close out Superior and advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

  • The Yellowjackets were led in scoring by Ferstl, who had 14 points while Carlson and Leccia filled in nine each.

  • The Cobbers were led in scoring by Maya Metcalf, who had 18 points.

The Yellowjackets close their season with an overall record of 12-16 while going 7-5 in UMAC play.
