Volleyball finishes season strong

After defeating UW-Platteville Friday night for their first conference win of the year, the Yellowjacket volleyball team would defeat UW-La Crosse to end the season with back-to-back conference wins.

In the first set of the afternoon, the Yellowjackets would fight the Eagles for control of the set. However, in the end it was the Yellowjackets who would win 28-26. For the second day in the a row Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) and Vikki Vinokur would lead the offensive attack for the Yellowjackets as they would post 13 and 10 kills apiece. They would be backed by Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) and Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) who each had six kills, along with Salann Gilbert (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) who had five kills.

In another close set the Yellowjackets would fall 26-24 to the Eagles. Although each team created six errors in the set it was the Eagles 16 kills over the Yellowjackets 12 that would give them the victory. Quality defense by the Yellowjackets would give them the edge in the rest of the match. Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) would lead the team with 22 digs; she was followed by Tynen with12 digs and Lauren Petersen who had 11. The Yellowjackets would bounce back and win the third set 25-13.

In their final set of the year the Yellowjackets would win 25-21 giving them their second conference victory. Two other Yellowjackets played key roles in today's victory, Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) had 36 assist and Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) that toss up three aces and had nine digs on the day. 

In the final games of the year, it was the three seniors (Gosson, Wirtz, and Gilbert) who would guide the Yellowjackets to victory. As the seniors graduate, the Yellowjackets will be left with a strong core of young players who will hope to continue this end of the season surge into the 2013 season. After starting the season 7-0, the Yellowjackets would finish the season 19-14 overall and 2-6 in the WIAC.
