Yellowjackets sweep Carleton triangle

Brooke Vonasek (18) celebrates a point with teammates Farrah Wirtz (12), Jessica Zimmerman (2) and Keely Deadrick (1)

The Yellowjacket volleyball team, fresh off a heartbreaking five-set loss to UW-Oshkosh on Friday night, had little time to dwell on the disappointment, as they were back on the court, playing in the Carleton College Triangle less than 24 hours after the defeat.  The quick turn around may have been just what the doctor ordered for the Yellowjackets, who swept their two matches on the day to get back in the win column.

Box Score

In the first match of the day the Yellowjackets avenged one of their early-season losses, sweeping Carleton on its home court by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-22.

Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) had a big offensive match for the Yellowjackets, leading the way with 16 kills and 40 attacks.  A kill by Tynen broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Yellowjackets a lead they wouldn't relinquish.  Tynen gave the Yellowjackets the lead and finished off the first set with another kill, as the Yellowjackets went on an 18-8 run to closee out the set.

The Yellowjackets never trailed in the second set, building a 16-9 advantage at one point.  Carleton closed the gap to a point at 23-22, but a Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) kill got the Yellowjackets back on service, and a Tynen kill gave the Yellowjackets a second set win.

The third set proved to be as tight as the second, with neither team being able to build an advantage of more than four points.  Late in the set Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) served the Yellowjackets to a 20-16 lead, but Carleton came back again to pull to within a point at 23-22.  Another kill by Tynen put the Yellowjackets in position to serve for the match.  Next, a service ace from Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) closed things out, giving the Yellowjackets a three-point victory in the set and a sweep in the match.

Tynen was the only Yellowjacket to reach double figures in kills, followed by Dvergsten who had nine.  The Yellowjackets attacked at 22.4 per-cent, compared to 14 per-cent for Carleton.  Deadrick had 29 of the Yellowjackets' 34 assists on the day.  Defensively, Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) had 11 kills, while Cole had 10 to lead the way.  The Yellowjackets were also a force at the net with nine blocks in the match.
