Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic this weekend

The third annual Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic, an early-season basketball tournament held by the Yellowjacket men's basketball team, will be held on Saturday, November 24 and Sunday, November 25 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym on the UW-Superior campus.  The tournament is sponsored by National Bank of Commerce.

"From everything I've heard about him, Mr. Thompson was a passionate basketball fan and an even more passionate fan of the Yellowjackets.  We're excited about the three teams that we have coming in and look forward to having a great weekend of basketball in an event named after a great man," Yellowjacket head coach Paul Eberhardt said.  "It's a great thing for our team and our university to have early in the season."

There will be two games held each day of the event.  On Saturday, November 24, the College of St. Scholastica will play UW-River Falls at 5:00 p.m.  Later, Concordia College out of Moorhead, Minn. will take on the Yellowjackets at 7:00 p.m.  On Sunday, November 25 Concordia will play UW-River Falls at 3:00 p.m., followed by a match-up of Twin Ports rivals, as St. Scholastica and the Yellowjackets will do battle at 5:00 p.m.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the door, and tickets purchased for one game are good for both games that day.  Adult tickets are $6, while senior and student tickets are $4.  UWS students are admitted free.  In addition, all kids eighth grade and lower will receive free admission throughout the weekend.

All four games of the tournament will also be covered by the iFan Sports Network
.

"Mr. Thompson was a man who dedicated his life to education and to the youth of the community, and that is why we open the doors to them on this event.  We want them to come in and enjoy Yellowjacket basketball and everything we have to offer," Eberhardt said.  "It's very important to his family that the kids of the community have the opportunity to enjoy our program and our university for this weekend event without paying to do so.

"So I hope we have a lot of kids coming out and cheering on our Yellowjackets this weekend."
