UW-Superior junior defenseman Jeff Forsythe (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary) factored into two-thirds of the Yellowjacket offense last weekend has been named the WIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week for the week of November 5.
Forsythe had a hand in all three goals the Yellowjackets scored on Friday, assisting on all three, including two power play markers as the Yellowjackets won at St. Mary's University 3-1. Then on Saturday afternoon Forsythe added another assist, on the power play goal that became the eventual game-winner as the Yellowjackets picked up a 3-1 win at St. Olaf.
A two-time All-WIAC and All-NCHA first team player, Forsythe is the top scorer for the Yellowjackets through the first two weeks of the season with six points, all assists. The six helpers match his assist output from all of last season.
“Jeff has been a very gifted offensive defenseman for us since he arrived in Superior and he is off to a tremendous start as a junior,” head coach Dan Stauber said. “He's one of those players that when he is on the ice he makes other players better and that's what he's been doing in the early part of this season. To have a hand in four-of-six goals tells a lot about how he's playing and what he's bringing to the team. I'm happy for him to receive this honor.”
The award marks the first time that Forsythe has received Player of the Week honors from the WIAC or the NCHA.
The Yellowjackets (3-1-0, 1-1-0 NCHA) return to action on Friday, November 9 when they play host to UW-Stevens Point in a conference match-up. Game time from Wessman Arena is 7:05 p.m.
