Box Score

In 2011-12, the Yellowjacket men's hockey team tied a school record by playing in ten overtime games.  One would think with that volume of overtime play they would have come out winners in at least one of them.  Not the case, however, as they lost three of them and tied the other seven.  In fact, if you count the mini-game the Yellowjackets lost in the first round of the playoffs at UW-Stevens Point, they actually dropped four games in overtime.

This season, they didn't need ten overtime games to pick up a victory.  They only needed one.

Mike Orosey (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) picked an opportune time to score his first collegiate goal, taking a perfect pass from Pat Dalbec (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) at 2:34 of the overtime period to lift the Yellowjackets to a 3-2 win over UW-Stevens Point at Wessman Arena.

The victory was the first overtime win for the Yellowjackets since January 9, 2009 when Chris Wilson scored to give the Yellowjackets a 5-4 win at Gustavus.  From that game until tonight's win over the Pointers, the Yellowjackets went 0-5-17 in overtime games, not counting a pair of mini-game losses that also went to overtime.

Early on it didn't look like overtime would be needed, however.  The Yellowjackets and Pointers played a wide open, fast-skating opening period.  There wasn't much offense - only a combined nine shots on net and not a single penalty was called.  The only goal of the period went the way of the Yellowjackets when Joey Massingham (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary) picked up a puck in the left corner and centered for Andy Singerhouse (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray), who one-timed a shot high over the glove of Pointer goaltender Nick Graves to make it 1-0.  It was the third of the year for Singerhouse, who was also assisted by Cody Hotchkin (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld).

It went to 2-0 Yellowjackets at 4:27 of the second period.  On the power play Nick Stoskopf (Warroad, Minn./Warroad) had the puck near the left point and took a shot that Tanner Dion (Hardisty, Alberta/Central Sedgewick) tipped up over Graves' shoulder to make it 2-0.  Chad Blanleil (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) also assisted on Dion's first of the year.

Things stayed at 2-0 until after the mid-point of the third period.  The Pointers finally broke through at 11:53 of the third period when Nick Kenney led the rush into the Yellowjacket zone and from the right circle snapped a shot over the glove of Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) to make it 2-1.  The Pointers kept pouring it on as time ticked away and they got the equalizer at 16:32 when Kyle Politz took a bad-angle shot from the right that Strandberg got a stick on, but he didn't get enough of it to keep it out and the game was tied at 2-2 and heading for overtime.

In the extra session Dalbec had the puck on the right side and appeared like he wanted to get a shot off but the play was broken up.  Dalbec stayed with the play and fed a pass across the slot to Orosey on the left post and he buried into the empty net to make the final score 3-2 in the Yellowjackets' favor.

Strandberg got the win, improving to 2-0-0 on the year as he finished with 14 saves.  Graves took the loss for the Pointers, making 21 saves in the game.

The Yellowjackets took three penalties for six minutes, while the Pointers took two for four minutes.  On the power play the Yellowjackets went 1-2 while the Pointers were 0-3.

The Yellowjackets (4-1-0, 2-1-0 NCHA) and Pointers will meet in game two of the weekend series on Saturday, November 10.  Game time from Wessman Arena is 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live locally on 91.3 FM KUWS, beginning with the pre-game show around 6:45 p.m.  The game can also be heard live on the Internet through the free audio feed from the iFan Sports Network.  A live, pay-per-view video stream of the game can be viewed through UW-Superior's online carrier, AmericaOneJon Garver will be on the call.
