In the college hockey world, the adage is that teams need to sweep at home and split on the road when it comes to the weekend series.  The Yellowjacket men's hockey team did one better than that this weekend, taking three-of-four points on the road at their series in River Falls.

After scoring in the final second of the second period, the Yellowjackets added two more in the third period and went on to a 3-2 win over the Falcons at W.H. Hunt Arena.

With the win, the Yellowjackets jumped into sole possession of second place in the NCHA, trailing first-place UW-Eau Claire by two points.

The game went scoreless for nearly two periods.  As the second period was winding down, Alec Doig (New Prague, Minn./New Prague) was checked from behind, resulting in a five-minute major penalty on the Falcons' Willie Hess.  Yellowjacket Ryan Hill (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) was called for a penalty on the same play, so the teams played four-on-four for two minutes before the Yellowjackets embarked on the power play.

Jeff Forsythe (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary) got the puck at the left point with seven seconds to play in the second period and had his shot stopped, but Pat Dalbec (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) picked up the rebound to the left of the goal, circled the net, got to the right circled and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Falcon goaltender Scott Lewan to make it 1-0 with .3 seconds left in the period.  It was the seventh goal of the year for Dalbec, and extended his scoring streak 11 games.  Joey Massingham (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary) also assisted on the play.

River Falls came back and tied the game at 7:12 of the third period when Zach Schrotenboer scored his fourth of the year.  The Yellowjackets regained the lead just 1:35 later.  A breakout pass found Brad Phenow (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) streaking through the Falcon defense and his shot snuck underneath Lewan to make it 2-1.  Phenow's second of the year was assisted by Forsythe and Hill.

The Yellowjackets extended the lead to 3-1 a few minutes later.  Josh Kesler (Naperville, Ill./Northville) and Cody Hotchkin (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) cycled the puck below the goal line and Hotchkin centered to Andy Singerhouse (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) in the slot, who beat Lewan for his fourth goal of the year at 13:58.

River Falls came back 29 seconds later when Jake Calleja scored his first goal of the year, and suddenly it was a 3-2 game.

In the waning minutes the Yellowjackets kept the Falcons at bay, not allowing them to gain the zone or get the puck deep enough to pull Lewan for an extra attacker until there was under a minute to play in the period.  Despite the extra attacker, the Falcons could not make a play inside or produce a good scoring opportunity to tie the game.  A last-second clearing attempt sealed the win for the Yellowjackets.

Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) made his seventh straight start, stopping 19 shots to win his sixth win of the year.  At the other end, Lewan made 14 saves.  It was the first time this season that the Yellowjackets were outshot.

The Yellowjackets took five penalties for 10 minutes, while River Falls took six for 23 minutes.  The Yellowjackets went 1-3 on the power play, while the Falcons were 0-4.

The Yellowjackets (8-2-1, 5-2-1 NCHA) have one weekend of play left in the first semester, and they will play host to Augsburg College on Friday, December 7 at 7:05 p.m.  The game can be heard live locally on 91.3 FM KUWS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area you can listen on the web through the iFan Sports Network.  The pay-per-view video stream is also available through UW-Superior's online partner, AmericaOne SportsJon Garver will be on the call.
