After Friday's loss to Augsburg, the word that was circulating around the Yellowjacket men's hockey team was character, as in, Saturday's road game at Gustavus was a character check following Friday's debacle with Augsburg.  If Saturday's result is any indication, the 2012-13 edition of the Yellowjacket men's hockey team proved that they have plenty of character, and that Friday's loss to the Auggies was a fluke.

Paced by three power play goals and a 28-save performance from Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I), the Yellowjackets bounced back from their third loss of the season with a sound 5-0 win over Gustavus Adolphus College at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn.

With the win the Yellowjackets close out the first semester with a 9-3-1 record.

Gustavus came out of the chute fast, carrying the play early and outshooting the Yellowjackets 9-3 at one point in the first period.  Late in the frame Alex Gallen leveled a big check on Kyle Leahy (Fort St. John, British Columbia/North Peace Secondary) and was called for contact to the head, a five-minute major.  Unlike their five-minute power play on Friday, however, the Yellowjackets took advantage.

At 17:56 Leahy had the puck on the left board and centered a pass that bounced off of a Gustavus player to Joey Massingham (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary) who directed it home to make it 1-0.  Leahy and Pat Dalbec (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) assisted.  Before the first period ended, with 9.6 seconds to play, Brad Phenow (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) fed a pass to Dalbec near the right circle and he fired a wrist shot that went off the post and in to make it 2-0.

The power play converted again early in the second, again part of the same five-minute power play.  This time Dalbec had the puck near the left circle and as he moved to his right let a shot go that beat Gustie goaltender Tyler Venne high on the glove side, going off the post and in to stretch the lead to 3-0.  Massingham and Leahy assisted.

In the final minute of the second period the bulge went to four.  Leahy moved the puck up the right wing to Nick Stoskopf (Warroad, Minn./Warroad) who got a step on the defense and broke in alone, faking the forehand before sliding a backhand underneath Venne with six seconds left in the period to make ti 4-0.  For Stoskopf it was his third goal of the season.

The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring late in the third period.  Kevin Clark (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and went in on the defense, making a brilliant stickhandling move to get around the defense before dropping a pass to Sam Prpich (Okotoks, Alberta/Holy Trinity Academy) whose wrist shot got past Venne to make the final score 5-0.  For Prpich it was his first collegiate goal.

After being pulled on Friday night, Strandberg rebounded nicely to pick up his seventh win and first shutout of the season, which was also his third career shutout.  Strandberg now stands at 7-2-1 on the year.  At the other end Venne was tagged with the loss, finishing with 29 saves.

Dalbec finished the game with three points (2 goals, 1 assist) and extended his scoring streak to 13 games.  Leahy had three assists and Massingham had a goal and an assist, to help fuel the Yellowjacket offense.

The Yellowjackets (9-3-1, 5-2-1 NCHA) are off until Friday, January 4 when they will play host to Nichols College.  Game time is 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on 91.3 FM KUWS, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area you can listen online through the iFan Sports Network.  The game can also be watched live online through UW-Superior's video partner, AmericaOne SportsJon Garver will have the call.
