There was little doubt the UW-Superior women's basketball team faced a difficult challenge Saturday afternoon against the UW-Whitewater Warhawks.

Not only were the Warhawks on a three-game winning streak, they Yellowjackets continued to play without guard Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) due to injury.

Add it all up and the difficulties proved to be too much to overcome as the Warhawks took an early lead and never looked back on the way to taking a 69-50 at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

The Yellowjackets (10-13 overall, 4-11 WIAC) stayed close early on, getting six points from Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) in the first 5:22 to only trail 13-12 after two free throws by Mariah Marcol (Dollar Bay, Mich./Dollar Bay) with 12:10 left in the opening half.

An 11-0 Warhawks (18-5, 10-4) run gave UW-Whitewater a bit of breathing room however as five different players scored during the burst, resulting in a 24-12 lead with 7:55 remaining following a layup by Kaitlin Thill.

UW-Whitewater continued to hold the lead for the rest of the half, taking their largest lead at 30-16 after a layup by Cortney Kumerow with 3:14 before Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) brought the Yellowjackets back within 33-22 at the half on a layup just before the intermission.

The Yellowjackets continued to fight early in the second half, cutting the deficit to 39-30 on a layup by Marcol with 15:49 remaining in regulation.

UW-Whitewater held firm down the stretch however, gradually upping the lead to 57-41 after a jumper by Thill with just 7:57 left in the second half.

The Yellowjackets would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way as the Warhawks grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and forced UW-Superior to commit 28 turnovers for the game.

UW-Superior was led by Davis with 16 points.  Hart added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Yellowjackets as well.

The Warhawks were paced by Kumerow with a game-high 17 points.  Mary Merg added 13 points while Katie Burton added 12 and Thill 10 for UW-Whitewater.

UW-Superior will host Crown College at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Tuesday.  Opening tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
