WIAC Quarters: Yellowjackets vs. Warhawks

The 2011-12 season has been one of the banner variety for the Yellowjacket women's basketball team.  True, as of this writing they won't be raising a banner to the rafters of Mertz Mortorelli Gym, but they've enjoyed more success this season than they have in nearly two decades, and then some.

First, there was a five-game winning streak in late December and into early January, which established a school record.

The 12 wins they've collected thus far on the year are tied for the second-most in school history.  To find the most recent season in which the Yellowjackets have won 12 games, you have to go back to 1983-84, the year they won the WWIAC North Division title and qualified for the NAIA tournament.  The school record for wins in a season is 13, established in 1979-80.

The five conference victories are the most since the team went 6-10 in 1994-95.

And most importantly, the Yellowajckets have qualified for the WIAC playoffs.  How rare has that been?  Since becoming the WIAC, the Yellowjackets have made the post-season just three other times, and not once since 2003-04.  They have an all-time WIAC playoff record of 1-3.  This year marks the first time that the Yellowjackets have made the playoffs since it went to a six-team format in 2009.

"We've been building over the past four years and ultimately our goal was to make the playoffs," senior Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) said.

"All we care about is making the playoffs," senior Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) added.

But it hasn't been easy.

The Yellowjackets knew they had a strong chance to make the top-six in 2011-12, but the team has been ravaged by injuries from day one.  Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis./), Tasha Stark (Menomonie, Wis./), Britni Blake and Carmen Watson (Milwaukee, Wis./James Madison), all expected to play pivotal roles on this year's club, have played a combined zero games.  Davis missed a handful of games and freshman standout Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders), who was establishing herself as a force in the WIAC, has missed the past half-dozen games due to injury.

"It's just something that you have to fight through," Hart said.

And the Yellowjackets have done that, reaching the post-season for the first time in eight years and hoping to add another banner to the rafters at The Mertz.
