Yellowjacket spikers take Mount Mary tourney

The Yellowjacket volleyball team got the 2012 season off to an outstanding start, winning four straight matches to bring home the first place hardware at the 2012 Mount Mary College Invitational.

In the first match on Friday the Yellowjackets jumped on Grace Bible College quickly, downing the Tigers 25-10, 25-6 and 25-16 in a match that took just 52 minutes.

As a team the Yellowjackets converted their offense at an almost 40 percent clip.  Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) led the way with seven kills and an attack percentage of .750.  Deadrick also had a team-high 20 assists and seven service aces.  Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) had six kills and also had an attack percentage of .750.  Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) led the Yellowjackets with six digs, followed by Tynen who had five. 

Gabrielle Blickley had four kills, Michelle Kamps had six assists and Naomi Kemper had five digs to lead Grace Bible College.

In the second match of Friday the Yellowjackets again made short work of an opponent, knocking out Crown College by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-5 to improve to 2-0.  The Yellowjackets controlled the tempo for most of the match and in the third set rattled off 11 consecutive points at one juncture.

Tyenen again paced the offense, this time with a team-best 12 kills.  Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) was right behind her with ten kills.  The Yellowjackets as a team attacked at .469 percent.  In contrast, Crown had a .000 attack percentage.  Deadrick 34 assists and five aces, at one point serving the Yellowjackets to four straight points.  Defensively, Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) led the Yellowajckets with 11 digs.  Gosson, Salann Gilbert (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) and Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) each had 1.5 blocks.

Trisha Birr had five kills and Judy Mundt-Metzger had a team-high 11 assists, two aces and 10 digs for Crown.

On Saturday the Yellowjackets played their first match of the day against the tournament hosts from Mount Mary.  And although they dropped their first set of the young season, the Yellowjackets soundly defeated Blue Angels by scores of 25-12, 22-25, 25-13 and 25-14. 

For the third time in the tournament the Yellowjackets held a distinct advantage in attack percentage, attacking at a clip of .279 percent (their lowest of the year) to .044 percent for Mount Mary.

Vonasek, who on the weekend was playing her first volleyball in over a year after missing last season with an injury, led the Yellowjackets with 13 kills and a .522 attack percentage.  Right behind her was Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) who had 10 kills.  The Yellowjackets as a team had 54 kills.  Deadrick continued her torrid start, leading the Yellowjackets with 42 assists and three aces.

Defensively the Yellowjackets were on top of their game in this one, with four players reaching double digits in digs.  Wirtz led the way with 18, while Deadrick and Tynen had 13 apiece.  Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) finished with ten digs.  Deadrick and Vonasek had 2.5 blocks each.

Sarah Wishau led Mount Mary with seven kills.  Chelsie Beeler had 18 assists and Stephanie Hardwick 17 digs for the Blue Angels in this one.

The championship match would be a rematch of the final round-robin match, with the Yellowjackets once again taking on the hosts.  And in the final the teams were close early, before the Yellowajckets surged ahead and swept the match in just 45 minutes by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-8.

Gosson was the only Yellowjacket in double figures in kills, leading the way with 11, while Deadrick posted 32 assists.  Tynen finished off a strong weekend with six kills and a team-high three aces.  Defensively, Wirtz and Nicole O'Bryan each had 11 digs, and Vonasek was a force at the net with a team-high five blocks.

The Yellowjackets (4-0, 0-0 WIAC) are on the road again, returning to action at the Bethany Lutheran College tournament on Friday, September 7 and Saturday, September 8.  Their first match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Friday against St. Mary's University of Winona, Minn.  They will also play Wartburg College and St. Catherine University in addition to the hosts at the weekend event.
