Yellowjackets 3, Finlandia 0

Wednesday was one of those days where just about everything lasted longer than the game for the Yellowjacket volleyball team. The trip to Hancock, Mich. was most definitely longer, and the warm-up period prior to the match likely lasted longer, as well. In the end, however, the Yellowjackets, who have been struggling of late, dropping five of their last six, will take it.

A quick straight-set win over Finlandia got the Yellowjackets back in the win column and put an end to their three-match losing streak. The lopsided win also gave the Yellowjackets the chance to play everyone on the roster, with 16 different players hitting the floor in the match.

Perhaps it was a classic case of bus legs, but the Yellowjackets struggled in the early going, falling behind by four at 9-5. There, head coach Lynne Deadrick called a timeout and whatever she said worked, as the Yellowjackets regrouped and regained the lead. A kill by Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) broke a 16-16 tie and gave the Yellowjackets their first lead since they were up 4-3 in the early going. The Yellowjackets would win nine of the last ten points and take the first set 25-17.

Momentum gained in the first set carried over into the second and the Yellowjackets were determined not to give the Lions a sniff in the second set. Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) started the set off with a kill and shortly thereafter served three straight aces to make the lead 5-1. The lead grew to 7-1 before Tynen's service was complete. With the lead at seven the Yellowjackets went on another extended run, fueled by the serving of Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) and the attacks of Vonasek and Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and their advantage grew into double digits. The lead reached a high-water mark of 17 on a Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) kill and the second set was over long before it was over, as the Yellowjackets cruised to a 25-9 win.

The third set offered more of the same, with the Yellowjackets again jumping out to a big lead early. With the score tied at 4-4 the Yellowjackets took seven of the next eight points to blow the game open. The Yellowjackets continued to cruise, claiming two points to every one for Finlandia. With the lead at nine, Alexis Landherr (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) slammed home a kill to give the Yellowjackets a ten-point lead and a victory in the third set, 25-15.

Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) led the charge offensively for the Yellowjackets with a team-high nine kills. Tynen was next with seven and Vonasek added six for the Yellowjackets, who had 39 kills in the match. The team fired at a .275 clip for the match, with Vonasek coming in as the top individual at .667. Deadrick set the pace again for the Yellowjackets, piling up 32 of the team's 37 assists.

From the service line Tynen was on fire, finishing the match with eight aces.

The Yellowjackets had 45 digs in the match, led by Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) who finished with 17. She was the only Yellowjacket in double figures. Deadrick had the next highest total with seven, followed by Walerius who had four. Vonasek had the lone solo block for the Yellowjackets, and she also added two block assists in the match.

The Yellowjackets (16-10, 1-5 WIAC) re-enter the WIAC next weekend, when they will play their final two conference matches of the season. They will be at UW-Stevens Point on Friday, October 25, with the game getting underway at 7:00 p.m.
