Thanksgiving basketball coming to Superior

On Thanksgiving weekend, the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the Yellowjacket men's basketball team will be hosting the 4th Annual Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. This year in addition to the Yellowjackets, Concordia College, Finlandia University and the College of St. Scholastica will be competing for the tournament championship.

The event is once again sponsored by National Bank of Commerce.

"We are proud to once again be hosting the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic at UW-Superior. It is a weekend that we look forward to because it is the first time that we get to play on our home court and show our incredible fans what they can look forward to during the season," head men's basketball coach Paul Eberhardt said. "We love being able to bring high quality basketball to Superior and our campus on Thanksgiving weekend and I think everyone will enjoy what this tournament will have to offer.

On Saturday, November 30, the Concordia and St. Scholastica will play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Yellowjackets taking on Finlandia at 7:30 p.m.

The following day, the teams that lose on Saturday will play in the third place game at 3:00 p.m., with the winners meeting in the championship game at 5:00 p.m. This season's format allows for a true tournament, as opposed to previous years where match-ups were set prior to the event.

Live stats will be available for all four games, as will a live video stream through the iFan Sports Network.

"We also want to make sure that we thank National Bank of Commerce for their continued support of the event," Eberhardt. "Bruce Thompson and National Bank of Commerce are extremely generous with their resources to help us put on the tournament and honor one of the biggest basketball fans that UW-Superior has ever seen."
