Playing with a depleted lineup is always a difficult task for any basketball team.  But playing on the road with a depleted team in the postseason often proves to be an even bigger challenge.


And such a challenge proved to be too much for the UW-Superior men's basketball team to overcome Tuesday night as UW-Stout put together a late-game run and pulled away for a 78-64 win over the Yellowjackets in their WIAC Conference Tournament contest at Johnson Fieldhouse.

With the loss, the Yellowjackets conclude the 2012-2013 season with a 9-17 record overall.  UW-Stout (20-6) moves on take on UW-Whitewater at Kachel Gymnasium on Thursday.

Playing without the services of either Bronson Byrne (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) or Austin Cahill due to injury, UW-Superior got off to a good start in the opening half, taking an 8-5 lead in the first 4:19 of the first half on the strength of two layups by Jarrod Peterson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), two free throws from Trent Davis (Apple Valley, Minn./St. Bernard's) and an inside score from Aaron Corry (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern).

The Yellowjackets continued to hold the lead over the next several minutes, taking their largest edge of the first half at 16-13 on a three-pointer by Davis with 10:53 remaining in the frame.

But the Blue Devils scored the next eight points, resulting in a 21-16 UW-Stout advantage on two free throws by Jarvis Ragland with 5:10 left in the half.

Corry's baseline jumper followed by a free throw by Brendan Bauer (Eleva, Wis./Gilmanton) brought the Yellowjackets to within 21-19 at the 4:32 mark.

UW-Stout came right back however, scoring eight of the next 10 points to take a 29-21 lead on a free throw by Alex Oman before heading into the intermission holding a 31-27 lead.

The Yellowjackets rallied back in the first 2:18 of the second half, evening matters at 35-35 on back-to-back three-point shots from Corry and Bauer.

After a 12-4 burst gave the Blue Devils a 47-39 burst following Erik Olson's jumper with 12:50 remaining in regulation, the Yellowjackets again came back, cutting the lead to 65-62 on a jumper by Davis with 3:56 showing on the clock.

Josh Kosloske scored the next six points for UW-Stout to up the Blue Devils up 71-62 at the 2:32 mark of the second half.

The Yellowjackets never got closer than nine points the rest of the way as they were outscored 7-2 in the last 1:24 of the contest.

Offensively, the Yellowjackets were paced by Peterson's 21 points.  Bauer finished with 14 points while Davis had 13 points and Corry pitched in with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

UW-Stout was led by Chris Hortman with 21 points.  Oman had16 points while Ragland had 14 and Kosloske 11 for the Blue Devils.
