Throughout the 2012-2013 season, the UW-Superior women's basketball team has risen to meet each challenge set before them.  Friday evening's test proved to be a bit too much however.  And as a result, the Yellowjackets' historic WIAC conference run came to an abrupt ending.

The UW-Whitewater Warhawks broke open a close game early in the second half, scoring 12 of the first 15 points of the frame before holding on down the stretch for an 80-71 win over UW-Superior at Kachel Gymnasium in Whitewater.

With the loss, UW-Superior likely finishes the season with a record of 19-8 while the Warhawks improved to 21-5 and advanced to Sunday's WIAC Conference Tournament final against UW-Stevens Point.

The Yellowjackets got off to a good start in the first half, taking a 9-5 lead in the first 2:57 behind a three-pointer and two free throws from Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port), a jumper by Hillary Peterson (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake) and a score from Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders).

A layup by the Warhawks' Amy Mandrell and a jumper by Sam Quandt evened matters 9-9 before the two sides traded the advantage over the next 11:19, resulting in a 27-26 Yellowjackets' edge with 3:36 left in the opening half.

But with the score even 28-28 and 2:23 showing on the clock, Mary Merg gave the  UW-Whitewater a 31-28 edge with a three-point play, helping lead the Warhawks to a 35-30 lead early in the second half.

The Warhawks continued to surge early in the second half, getting a three-pointer from Merg on the first possession of the second half along with a free throw from Courtney Kumerow, another three by Megan Theune and two free throws by Lisa Palmer to lead 44-30 with 17:16 remaining in regulation.

From there, the Yellowjackets never got closer than eight points as the Warhawks out-rebounded the Yellowjackets 43-31 overall while also grabbing 20 offensive rebounds in holding on down the stretch.

Offensively, the Yellowjackets were led by Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar), who scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting.  Nett added 16 points while Carmen Watson (Milwaukee, Wis./James Madison) had 11 for UW-Superior.

The Warhawks were led by Kumerow with 18 points.   Palmer added 15 points while Merg had 14 points and Kaitlyn Thill pitched in with 12.
