Volleyballers to "Dig Pink" October 4



For the sixth straight season, the Yellowjacket volleyball team, in conjunction with the rest of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will participate in games and promotions designed to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer in the month of October, which nationally is "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

Each of the nine WIAC teams will be involved in at least one promotional event throughout the month of October.  Various promotional activities will take place at each match to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.  Spectators are encouraged to wear pink clothing in support of all those affected by breast cancer.  Over the past five seasons, conference volleyball programs have raised an amazing $113,037 in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

"Over the years UW-Superior and the teams in the WIAC have made an effort to do their part and raise awareness for different cancers through different causes," athletics director Steve Nelson said. "Whether it is 'Caps for Cancer' with the soccer teams or 'Stick it to Cancer' with the hockey teams or 'Dig Pink,' we want to make sure we are doing our part and welcome the opportunity to make a difference in peoples lives."

For the Yellowjackets, their "Dig Pink" match will be on Friday, October 4 when they host UW-La Crosse at Mertz Mortorelli Gym beginning at 7:00 p.m. Fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink to the game and make a donation to the Side-Out Foundation. The Side-Out Foundation, established in 2004, is a campaign uniting volleyball players and coaches with the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education, and patient services.

Donations collected on behalf of the Yellowjacket volleyball team will go to the Side-Out Foundation.
