Box Score

Stout 2, Yellowjackets 1

One night after the Yellowjackets had their second-biggest offensive night of the season, they had the chance to do something they haven't been able to do all season long - sweep a weekend series.

And early on it looked the offensive explosion was going to carry over into a second night. But after scoring early in the first the well went dry and UW-Stout took advantage, scoring once in each of the first and second periods to sneak past the Yellowjackets 2-1 at Wessman Arena on Saturday night.

The loss dropped the Yellowjackets to 6-9-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the WIAC, where they currently sit in fourth place heading into next weekend's showdown with powerhouse UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers lost 2-1 at UW-River Falls on Saturday, as those teams also split a weekend series.

The only goal of the game for the Yellowjackets came at 4:03 of the first period when Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) gave a pass to Joey Massingham (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary) in the left circle and his slap shot beat Stout goaltender Corey Koop to make it 1-0. The power play goal was just the second of the season for Massingham and snapped an 11-game goal drought.

Late in the first period the Blue Devils tied the game when Tyler Cayemberg tried to center a pass from left wing corner and it slipped underneath goaltender Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) to make the score 1-1 with just 21 seconds left in the period.

The eventual game-winning goal came midway through the second period. A turnover at the Yellowjacket blue line was recovered by Jordan Tredinnick at the right point and he skated down the slot and wired a wrist shot over the glove hand of Strandberg for his fifth of the year and Stout had its first lead of the weekend at 2-1.

Late in the second period the Yellowjackets nearly tied the game, but Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) was unable to convert. His initial shot was stopped by Koop and he pushed the rebound just wide of the goal and the one-goal deficit stood heading into the intermission.

The Yellowjackets pressed hard in the third period, outshooting the Blue Devils 15-7 in the frame, but Koop stood strong. The Yellowjackets pulled Strandberg for an extra attacker in the final minute, but were unable to score the equalizer and were forced to settle for a series split as Koop made the lead stand up.

Koop was the star of the game for Stout, finishing the night with 39 saves to improve to 6-10-0 on the season. At the other end Strandberg, who was making back-to-back starts for just the second time this season finished with 30 saves and is now 4-4-2 on the year.

Stout took four penalties for eight minutes in the game while the Yellowjackets took just two for four minutes. On the power play the Yellowjackets went 1-for-4, while the Blue Devils were 0-for-2.

The Yellowjackets will now hit the road for a two-game set at UW-Stevens Point. Game one of the series at K.B. Willett Arena is set for Friday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on 91.3 FM KUWS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in on the Internet through the iFan Sports Network or the KUWS web site. Jon Garver will have the call.
