Yellowjackets Can't Hold On vs. Blue Devils

Box Score

With the end of the 2014 season looming, the Yellowjacket volleyball team headed south to take on UW-Stout in a mid-week conference match. After splitting a pair of five-set matches on the road last week, the Yellowjackets were searching for a win and a renewed source of confidence for a late-season run. The Blue Devils had a different plan, however, one that didn't include a Yellowjacket victory. Once again it took five sets, but in the end it was a defeat that dealt a crushing blow to the Yellowjackets in their quest to make the WIAC post-season.

Stout 3, Superior 2

The Yellowjackets came out strong in the opening set, building an early lead before the Blue Devils clawed their way back. Stout pulled to within three at 20-17, but the Yellowjackets were able to go on a run to close it out and earn the 25-20 win, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Stout, which played strongly in the middle of the first set, rode the momentum to an early lead in the second set. The Yellowjackets fought hard, but the Stout attack was just too much and they cruised to a 25-13 win, evening the match at a set apiece.

The third set saw the Yellowjackets get back to what gave them success in the beginning, as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Stout called a timeout and was able to stop the bleeding, but the Yellowjackets quickly regained possesion and stretched the lead to seven at 9-2. The rest of the set was played fairly even, and the Yellowjackets closed it out with a 25-16 win, putting themselves on the brink of victory.

It looked like the Yellowjackets would earn that important WIAC win. They continued the strong play into the fourth set and pushed their advantage to 16-12. That was about where the Yellowjacket luck came to an end. Stout regained possession and went on a 9-0 run and won 13 of the final 16 points to take the set 25-19 and evening in the match.

The fifth set was all Blue Devils. They jumped out to a big lead early and put the Yellowjackets away, winning five of the final six points to take the set 15-6 and the match 3-2.

Big players for the Yellowjackets were Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko), who had a match-high 17 kills. Bandelin accounted for half of the Yellowjackets' 34 kills in the match. Defensively she was also one of three Yellowjackets in double-digit digs, finishing the match with ten. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) had 29 assists to go along with 10 digs, and Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) finished with 22 digs.

Of the 88 points Superior scored during the match, only 34 of those points came on kills, and only had 32 assists.

UW-Stout was the complete opposite. They recorded 62 kills during the match, led by the duo of Molly Brion and Morgan Denny (15 kills each), and Karley Wiensch had 57 assists during the match. The Blue Devils also had four players in double-figures in digs. The recorded 18 more digs (82-64) than Superior and had 30 more assists (62-32).

Superior falls to 8-19 on the season overall and 1-4 in the WIAC. This weekend the Yellowjackets will return home, hosting the 2014 Stinger Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. They play Maranatha Bapitist University Friday at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday they will play Northland College at 10:00 a.m. and Bethany Lutheran College at 12:00 p.m. Saturday is also the Yellowjackets' annual Parents Day.

This weekend marks the beginning of the Yellowjackets' "Dig Pink" effort. As part of the WIAC initiative, the Yellowjackets will help raise money that goes toward breast cancer awareness and research. Proceeds from the fundraising will go to the Side Out Foundation.
