Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

After a strong showing last weekend, which saw the Yellowjackets go 3-0 in the Stinger Classic, the team had a quick turnaround with two matches on Monday night at The Mertz. Superior took on Finlandia University and Carleton Carleton in two of the three matches of the triangular.

Superior 3, Finlandia 0

Superior handled Finlandia with relative ease, winning all three sets without much trouble. With not many rotation players seeing significant action, Yellowjacket Head Coach Lynne Deadrick turned to her bench players for the match against Finlandia. To say the match was competitive would be an overstatement. The Yellowjackets handled their business in swift action as the match lasted only 50 minutes.

In the first set the Yellowjackets took an early lead, only to see Finlandia go on a 4-0 run to pull ahead. The Yellowjackets then followed with a 7-2 run of their own, using several Finlandia errors and a pair of service aces from Staci Sjostrand (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) to take the lead for good. Superior used a 9-2 to run to close out the set and pick up the 25-12. The final point of the set coming courtesy of a service ace by freshman Jaimee Buck (Luck, Wis./Luck). Finlandia made several errors and had a lot of mishits, helping Superior cruise to the win.

The second set was all Yellowjackets, as the home squad jumped out to a 9-1 lead. Kaitlyn Holen (Fergus Falls, Minn./Underwood) and Elizabeth Koza (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) combined for several kills early to put the set out of reach. The Yellowjackets increased the lead to 17-2 before Finlandia scored a few points to make the score somewhat respectable. In the end Superior still came away with a 25-9 set win.

Things were more competitive in the third set, but ultimately the Yellowjackets were just too strong for the Lions. With the score tied at seven, the Yellowjackets used another Finlandia error and a kill from Desirae Marcott (Abbotsford, Wis./Abbotsford) to pull ahead for good. The Lions stayed close and were within three at 18-15 before the Yellowjackets used a 7-0 run to win the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

Superior's attack percentage was .380 in the match, one of its highest percentages of the season. Finlandia, meanwhile attacked a .026 clip. The Yellowajckets out-killed the Lions 37-18 and outscored the Lions 75-36. The Yellowjackets were also deadly at the line with 14 service aces.

Key contributors for the Yellowjackets were Koza, who led the team with seven kills. Holen, Marcott, and Sjostrand all had five kills each. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) had 25 assists, and she and Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) tied for the team lead with four aces each. Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) led the Yellowjackets with 19 digs.

The win stretched the Yellowjacket winning streak to four games.

Carleton 3, Yellowjackets 0

All good things must come to an end, and that's what happened to the Yellowjacket winning streak in their second match of the day. Carleton, one of the hottest teams in the MIAC came into the match on a five-game streak, and the Knights overpowered the Yellowjackets to sweep the match 3-0 and keep their winning streak alive.

The opening set was back-and-forth with the teams trading points. A kill from Vicki Vinokur (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) tied the set at 9-9, but from there the Knights took over. A 7-1 run gave them a lead that was insurmountable, and they closed the set by winning the final five points to earn a 25-15 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set number two unfolded in much the same way as the first, with the teams once again trading points. With the score tied 5-5 Sjostrand aced the Knights on a serve to give the Yellowjackets the lead. The home team stayed in front for a majority of the set, and rode kills from Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) and Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko) during a 4-0 run that ultimately saw them build a six-point lead, 16-10. From there the Knights began their comeback, slowing chipping away at the Yellowjacket advantage. Carleton tied the match at 17 before a kill by Nightingale once again gave the Yellowjackets the lead. Carleton then won the next two points to regain the lead, only to have the Yellowjackets answer. With the score tied at 20, a Carleton error and Vinokur kill gave the Yellowjackets a two-point lead at a great point in the match. The teams again traded points and if the Yellowjackets would just hold serve, they would even the match at 1-1. Carleton had other ideas, however, and after a timeout won four straight points to take the set 25-23 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Yellowjackets were never able to recover, and the Knights smelled blood in the water. The third set was all Carleton, as the Knights built an early 10-4 lead. That was as close as the Yellowjackets would get, as the Knights pulled away and closed out the set, 25-11, sweeping the match.

Bandelin led the Yellowjackets offensively with nine kills, followed by Vinokur and Gabrielle Olson (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie) with six apiece. Deadrick had 19 assists. Defensively, Walerius had 12 digs, the only Yellowjacket to reach double figures.

Carleton was led by freshman Lucy Stevens who had a match-high 21 kills. Alicia Flatt had 28 assists and Camille Benson had 19 digs to lead the Knights.

The Yellowjackets (12-20, 1-4 WIAC) close out the regular season with three straight conference matches. The first comes Wednesday, October 29 when the Yellowjackets travel to River Falls to take on the Falcons. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
