Yellowjackets Rout Lumberjacks

Cody Hotchkin celebrates a first period goal against Northland Wednesday.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 5, Northland 1

For the second time in six days the Yellowjacket men's hockey team faced off against Northland College. Last Friday in Ashland the Yellowjackets jumped out to an early lead, but in the end were forced to sweat out a one-goal win. On this night the Yellowjackets again forged ahead early, but this time around enjoyed a much different result.

The Yellowjackets scored twice in the first, twice in the second and once in the third and limited the Lumberjacks' chances throughout the game to win comfortably at home, 5-1 on the night before Thanksgiving.

With the win, the Yellowjackets have now won three in a row to climb back above the .500 mark, gaining much-needed momentum as they head into conference play next week against an unbeaten UW-River Falls team.

After half a period of scoreless play the Yellowjackets drew first blood when Cody Hotchkin (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the puck to the left of the goal and banked it in off of Northland goaltender Jesse DiLillo to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. Hotchkin's third of the year came at 11:07 of the opening period and was assisted by Tom Paine (Superior, Wis./Marshall School).

Less than a minute later the Yellowjackets extended the lead. Matt Audette (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) carried the puck into the Northland zone on the right wing and, from a sharp angle, put a backhand on goal that glanced off the post and in to make it 2-0 just 53 seconds later. For Audette, it was his first collegiate goal. The goal also spelled the end of the night for DiLillo, who was lifted in favor of Dax Deadrick after allowing two goals on 13 shots.

The Yellowjacket lead bulged to three just over five minutes into the second period. Wes Judnick (Virginia, Minn./Virginia), with assists from Hotchkin and Paine picked up his first collegiate goal. Judnick fired a shot from the left point that got through traffic and beat Deadrick. The lead went to four just 15 seconds after Judnick's goal when James Hughes (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) shot from the left circle and beat Deadrick on the glove side for his second goal of the season at 5:33. Jordan Shockley (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) and Connor Faupel (Rochester, Minn./Century) assisted.

Northland scored its only goal of the game at 13:24 of the second period when Michael Berens, the top scorer for the Lumberjacks, took a shot from the slot that beat Yellowjacket goaltender Cory Simons (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) on the glove side to cut the lead to 4-1.

The third period was, for the most part, uneventful with a lot of play in the neutral zone. The Yellowjackets provided the only goal of the frame in the final minute, when Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) picked up a rebound of a shot from Audette and poked it past Deadrick with just 45 seconds to play to make the final score 5-1.

Simons earned his third consecutive win, making 17 saves in the game. He is now 3-1-0 on the year. At the other end DiLillo and Deadrick combined for 35 saves.

The Yellowjackets took three penalties for six minutes, while the Lumberjacks took two for four minutes. The Yellowjackets were 0-of-2 on the power play, while Northland went 0-of-3. It was anothe perfect game on the penalty kill for the Yellowjackets, who entered the game ranked second in the nation in the statistic. After Wednesday's performance, the Yellowjackets have killed off 29-of-30 shorthanded chances, including 27 in a row.

The Yellowjackets (5-4-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) are off until Friday, December 5 when they host UW-River Falls at Wessman Arena, beginning at 7:05 p.m. It is Ugly Sweater Night and the Yellowjackets will be wearing special limited edition jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. It is also "Toys for Tots" night and "Teddy Bear Toss" night. Fans are asked to bring new, unopened toys to donate to the local "Toys for Tots" drive. All toys will benefit children in Superior and Douglas County. All bears collected for the Teddy Bear Toss will also benefit children in the community.

The game will be aired live locally on 91.3 FM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:40 p.m. If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in online through the iFan Sports Network. Jon Garver will have the call.
