Pointers Pull Away From Yellowjackets

Ty Ketz had 10 points Saturday vs. Stevens Point.
Box Score

Stevens Point 77, Yellowjackets 54

After a disappointing loss Wednesday to UW-River Falls, the men's basketball team traveled to UW-Stevens Point Saturday morning in hopes of a victory, their first of the season in conference play. UW-Stevens Point is down this season compared to years past, so the chances for Superior to grab a victory were better than normal. However, Stevens Point had different ideas.

The Pointers shot an astounding 65.3% from the field en route to a 77-54 over the Yellowjackets at Quandt Fieldhouse.

Superior jumped out to a 2-0 lead, getting the scoring started with a layup by Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner). Superior held the lead until 11-10, when Stevens Point's Austin Ryf hit a jumper to take an 11-10 lead. Stevens Point would stretch that lead to as much as 13 points at 34-21 on a fastbreak lay-up by Stephen Pelkofer, and took a 36-27 lead into halftime.

Stevens Point came out in the second half determined to distance themselves from Superior, and they did just that. With just over 11 minutes left in the game, the Pointers had a 20-point lead, 54-34. They managed to stretch that lead to as much as 28 points late in the second half. They would end up winning by 23 points, 77-54.

Once again. Lindblom led the Yellowjackets in scoring with 15 points and added five rebounds. Three Yellowjackets recorded 10 points, Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley), Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton), and Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton). The remaining nine players who played scored 10 pointscombined.

Alex Richard led the Pointers with 16 points.

Stevens Point shot 65.3% from the field for the game, while Superior shot 44.2%. The Pointers were a great three-point shooting team last season, but only made two three-pointers tonight, going 2-of-7. They had 14 assists to three turnovers, while Superior had six assists to 13 turnovers. Another interesting fact, there were only 45 rebounds in the entire game. On average there is over 55 rebounds per game.

With the loss, Superior falls to 0-2 in the WIAC. Their next game is Wednesday at UW-Eau Claire, a team they have beaten five times in a row. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
